NEW YORK TRACKS IN FOR GREAT YEAR Outlook Decidedly Bright for Some Wonderful Rac ¬ ing Erpcct RecordBreaking Patronage NEW YORK X Y May 13 Next Thursday at 230 p in the bugle will call the horses lo the post for the first race on the opening day of the New York season for J010 at Jamaica It is cus ¬ tomary for turf writers to predict the greatest season ever in tho preliminary notices and in many cases the predictions have proved true Tins year indicates without w ssibility of dispute the most promising season This is gathered from facts In the first place Maryland has never had such crowds flowing through the gates Never has there been the large volume of speculation in the mutuels as tliis spring at Bowie Havre de Grace and Pimlico All former records have been passed That is the history of the spring racing patronage in Mary ¬ land Coming to New York reports from the offices of the associations vhich will provide the earlier racing at Jamaica and Bclmont Park are more than favorable for increased attendance attendanceApplications Applications for season membership badges have increased to almost an unprovidable extent This is particularly the case in the requests for boxes At Jamaica nearly every box has been sold not ¬ withstanding provision has been made in the en ¬ largement of the box stands in the clubhouse Never has this occurred before At Belmont Park the same conditions exist Secretary Earlocker be ¬ lieves some of the applicants cannot be accom ¬ modated These are facts and not press agent propaganda That there will be good sport to warrant the dcliige of patronage is quite certain there being great rivalry in every division of thoroughbreds No one yet knows which is going to be the star thrceyenrold of the year there being nearly a dozen known eligibles for the honor Sonie others may drop from the clouds as it were Among the older or handicap horses there are sufficient to warrant contests far out of the ordinary with such prospective starters as Cudgel Star Hawk Liberty Loan War Cloud Roamer Old Roseliud Hoi lister Naturalist Lucullite Sun Briar Motor Cop not even enumerating the great threeyearolds that will be mixed in with this representative collection Of the twoyearolds little can be said at this writing for the best are still under cover pre ¬ sumably Only the H P Whitney horses have shown anything of note He has a string tliat will cer ¬ tainly be factors in all the stakes if reports of his possessions at Brookdale Farm are correct Already lie has deriionstrated distinctly he has far and away the pick of those shown Not once but on several occasions his colors have been carried by first and second horses in Uvoyearold races in Maryland and once he finished first and second in two two yearold races on the same day This is a record that may stand for many years in fact it is something never Itefore achieved according to the oldest of racing authorities authoritiesAs As customary the feature of the opening day at Jamaica will be the Pauinonok Handicap at threequarters bC a mile1 If all the good sprinters entered go to the post it will be a race of more than ordinary interest Even if only the top notchers such as Old Rosebud Motor Cop Old Koenig Naturalist Flags War Cloud and Sunny Slope face the starter it will be difficult to predict the winner But there are some of the thrceycarolJls to Ber reckoned with carrying light1 weight There is no telling what they may do to the older horses in a short sprint though they are a rather weak staff to lean upon in the spring season A fair line on their chances is gathered from the fact that while Sweep On a rare good colt beat Old Rosebud at Pimlico the latter should have won the race It is doubtful if there is a threeyearold in the Paumonok Handicap as good as Sweep On hence the younger division of horses could almost be eliminated Unless the fast Viiidex should be sent after the stake instead of being re ¬ served for the Prcakiiess which irf scheduled for AVednewlay AVednewlayBriefly Briefly summarized a wonderful season of racing is in store for patrons of the metropolitan circuit
