VANDERBILTS ENGLISH DERBY COLT AV K Vanderbilts French colt McKinley by Macdonald Mrs Despard by Isinglass Is being stoutly backed to win the Epsom Derby to be run two weeks from Wednesday and for which the English colts The Panther and Stefan the Great are first and second choices McKinleys present figure is 100 to 7 against Of McKinley AV Allison in the Ixmdon Sportsman writes 1 know that Mr ATanderbilts trainer AVilliam Duke thinks that McKinley is an extra good colt I also know that although the plans for French racing are uncertain and the intention of bringing a number of horses over to England to race may be abandoned the idea of winning the Derby with McKinley is still en ¬ tertained and certain sums of money have been invested on the son of Macdonald and Mrs Despard at such prices as 20 to 1 It is impossible to gauge the form especially as McKinleys victories were in Spain but Dukes judgment in itself should bo good enough to assure us that his Derby horse can ¬ not be really moderate Time passes fast in these days and though we saw Mrs Despard an ardent suffragette contesting an election recently it seems like ancient history to set back to the salad days of the militant suffragettes It happens however that the little mare by Isinglass Cri de Guerre was unnamed when Sir John Thursby gave her to me and I called her Mrs Despard on account of her dam
