HOW MCLAUGHLIN BEAT BILL DALY Jimmy McLaughlin like several other great riders of the past Snapper Garrison Dare Devil Fitzpatrick and Winnie OConnor graduated from the harsh but efficient school of Father Bill Daly The Hartford sage was just stepping into the business of racing and he had McLaughlin a seventyfivepound boy galloping horses for him himA A blow and a kick from Daly caused McLaughlin to sever his working relationship with the elderly tyrant It was the only time Bill ever whipped me said McLaughlin but it was the first and the last Ill never ride another race for you I said and I quit Bill had a contract on me until I was twentyone years of age It had seven years to run The Dwycr Brothers Phil and Mike were just beginning to race Jimmy Itowc had been en ¬ gaged to train Rowe was then only a lad He was anxious to have me ride When I quit Bill I told Rowe about the trouble troubleOf Of course Bill eotild prevent me from riding as I had left without a written discharge and he held contract papers on me Rowe got the Dwyer brothers to buy the contract After a great deal of dickering Bill sold it for 500 But he drew up another by the terms of which I was to pay him 3 out of every mount I rode He would not agree to the sale of the original contract on my services unless he had a finger in my earnings So I gave him what he asked for But six months later realizing what a fine income this would be for Bill I prevailed on his brother Mike to help me get that paper Between ua we got Bill to part with it for 1000
