MAN 0 WAR STILL UNBEATEN Crack Colt Triumphs in United States Hotel Stakes War Pennant and Milkmaid Win Winfor for Commander J K L Boss Sande Resumes Riding BY J L DEMPSEY DEMPSEYSARATOGA SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y August 2 Tin running of the United States Hotel Stakes this afternoon bringing together some of the most highly regarded youngsters afforded opportunity for a good line on the possible champion of the year anl the Glen Riddle Farm representative Man o War by his sparkling performance in the race showed himself not far from one if not the best of tins years crop of two year old racers There is no good reason why he should not be accepted as the best twoyearold for up to date he has won all of the six races in which he started In commanding style Among his victims this afternoon was the much discussed Bonnie Mary considered by the easterners as the best filly oCthe year She failed to be formidable at any part of todays race but there were extenuating circumstances in her behalf for she was away badly to a somewhat ragged start and closed up an immense gap to finish in fourth place The winner showed quickness at the barrier and hlsalibliy tb geOif motTohrfast affords him a big advantage He had an outer post position and the rise of the barrier found him in the lead in a twinkling Loftus who had the mount allowed him to go about his business in his own way simply guiding him close to the inner rail Man o War from the first few strides had a three lengths lengthsf f lead and he virtually re ¬ tained this margin to the end but was eased up in the last sixteenth Harry Pajrne Whitneys Upset was the closest follower the winner had for most of the race but near the end he had to be hustled to withstand the challenge of Homely which finished with a great burst of speed Kentucky was represented in the race by Edward Bradleys By Golly but that youngster showed only an ordinary performance and was guided wide for the entire race raceThe The stake had a gross value of 10000 of which 7COO net went to the winner The winner cost liis owner 5000 as a yearling and was bought at the Saratoga sales last summer summerCLOSE CLOSE FINISH IN KENNER STAKES STAKESTha Tha Kenner Stakes for threeyearolds which had its first decision in 1870 when the redoubtable Enquirer placed it to Ids credit was a secondary feature on todays card A filly triumphed again in it same as Enfilade did last year The winner Milkmaid carried the colors of Commander J 1C L Ross was superbly ridden by jockey Sande and achieved her success only after a spirited stretch duel with Cirrus There will always be a question if tho latter was not the best and was beaten by the fact that he was forced wide when Sande elected to take his mount in the middle of the track There were only three starters and the first threequarters of the race found Milkmaid and Cirrus botli under hard restraint with Frogtown far out in the lead Just before reaching the lower turn Sande and Ensor called on their respective mounts and Frogtown was quickly relegated to the rear Cirrus appeared in the last eighth as if he would succeed in bis effort to overhaul Milkmaid but she hung on in game style and led the Hildreth representative to the finish by a neck Ensor made a claim of foul against the winner but it was not allowed The stakes had a net value of 2875 to the winner winnerTodays Todays attendance while of good proportion was somewhat disappointing and nowise came i to the immense throng present on the opening day Notables were again conspicuous and the exclusive section held a full quota of prominent persons In ¬ cluding Mr and Mrs W M Jeffords George D Widener James K Maddux J E Widener Brooks Baker Capt Rail Parr J C Cosden Capt P M Walker M L and C A Schwartz Charles E Slather Walter J Salmon and others othersJockey Jockey Sande who was suspended for sixty cal ¬ endar days at Churchill Downs for reaching out for Lillian Shaws bridle while astride Milkmaid dur ¬ ing the running of the Kentucky Oaks signalized his return to the saddle by riding War Pennant to victory and scoring the first purse for J K L Ross at this term of racing War Pennants vic ¬ tory was unexpected as Harry Payne Whitneys Dominant was held in high esteem and confidently expected by his connections to defeat his op ¬ ponents He led Kalitun and Bully Boy until reaching the last eighth where War Pennant moved up with a lightninglike rush and after a brief brush with the Whitney representative drew out with great ease to win In decisive fashion Domi ¬ nant tired perceptibly after being overhauled but he was good enough to hold Kaljtan safe for second place placeThe The half dozen that started in the steeplechase Continued on third pace MAN 0 WAR STILL UNBEATEN Continued from first page furnished a spectacular contest with victory ulti ¬ mately going to Northwood which had been the leader for practically the entire race Crest Hill was the one considered best in the race and he flat ¬ tered extensively by staying close to the leader and just before reaching the next to the last jump took command but suddenly gave way again to Northwood which l eat him to the finish by a scant Jialf length Rhomb was good enough to outlast Kingstown Pier for the smaller portion of the purse Crest Hills sudden weakening was explained by his having struck himself while making a landing over the last jump and he showed lameness after the finish finishThose Those who pin their faith to choices experienced difficulty from the outset and with the excep ¬ tion of Man o AVar not a favorite rewarded its backers backersCourt Court Gallant in with an ordinary band in the fiftli race was backed with rare confidence but his admirers looked on with dismay at his break clown which came in the first quarter while he was in a contending position His eliminaton en altleil Katie Canal to move away from the others anil won from Manoevre and Umbala UmbalaFor For some reason Bullseye which was regarded as best in the final race was passed up in favor of Smite Thq sharps evidently figured an angle of some sort to give Smite preference Smite is trained by L Garth while Bullseye is trained by the senior Garth The running of the race found Bullseye much the best and O Robinson did not leave the result much in doubt after reaching the stretch for h drew away from the others with Bullseye and continued riding him hard in spite of a long lead that he enjoyed Hidden Ship landed in secon1 place and Roseland finished third The winner was in to be sold for 1700 but received Max Hirschs attention to the extent of an 800 raise the owner protecting the colt with a bid of 2505 2505Crest Crest Hills defeat brought about his transfer to a new owner J Lumsderi claiming him for 1100 1100There There was some doubt as to jockey Sandes eligi ¬ bility to accept mounts as yet some contending that his sixtyday suspension did not expire until August 11 but this was clarified by Sam C Nuckols Jr who was one of the stewards who sus ¬ pended Sandc Xuekols said that the suspension waa for sixty calendar days daysJockey Jockey Lloyd Gentry who has for years been rated as one of the leading riders of this coun ¬ try will forsake the saddle for good and shortly go to his extensive ranch in Texas and give it his undivided attention His decision to quit rid ¬ ing in races was made yesterday after consulta ¬ tion with doctors who advised that he quit riding Increasing weight has kept Gentry reducing steadi ¬ ly and following his road work yesterday to de ¬ crease to make weight on Best Pal he suffered two hemorrhages E R Bradley who holds the con ¬ tract for Gentrys services also strongly recom ¬ mended that the rider quit and go to his Texas homo and regain his full strength strengthNominations Nominations to the Valuable and sporting event the Grab Bag Handicap are due on August 7 and weights to it will appear August 14 14Among Among the newcomers this morning were Ed Alvey of Louisville and Joe Brill of Cincinnati Both motored here hereThomas Thomas C McDowell received news today of the death of his highly regarded brood mare Auriga She had a handsome colt foal by her side sired by The Manager which will now come in for special care
