MANAGER M J WINN IN LOUISVILLE Predicts Great Fall Season of Racing in Kentucky East Interested in Championship Stakes LOUISVILLE Ky August 2 Col M J Winu vicepresident and general manager of the Kentucky Jockey Club which controls the race tracks hero nt Lexington and at Latonia arrived in this city yesterday morning from New York where lie hail been on a business and pleasure trip since the fore part of July He was accompanied by Col Andrew Vennie who has long been interested in Churchill Downs as a stockholder and director Both will re ¬ main in Louisville for several days and then pro ¬ ceed to Latonia LatoniaWithin Within an hour after his arrival Colonel Winu was at his desk at the Downs He came to look over some contemplated improvements of a minor nature in ao cffort to provide more room for the race goers at the local track but the big improve ¬ ments will not be undertaken until after the fall season is over as the time between now and then is too short shortI I have seen a lot of racing in and around New York in my time said Colonel Wlnn but never before have I seen as much interest in the sport as this year The attendance at Empire City was larger than ever despite rain and a muddy track the greater part of the time and there is no doubt that Saratoga will have the biggest and best meeting in its history As to the coming autumn season in Kentucky I want to say that the Ken ¬ tucky Jockey Club will provide the same highclass brand of sport that featured the spring meetings and I look for a number of eastern stables to come this way Interest in the 50000 Latonia Champion ¬ ship Stakes is at fever heat around New York and the best horses eligible from that section will be sent to Latonia to run in it itIt It Is the intention of iColoncl Winn to go to Saratoga August 10 to look after the nominations for the fall stakes to be run on the Kentucky cir ¬ cuit The stake blanks will be distributed among the horsemen within a few days daysCOMMODORE COMMODORE GAITHEB DEAD DEADWilliam William Gaither known to hundreds of turfmen as Commodore and one of the best known colored grooms on the American turf died today at Churchill Downs He was fiftynine years of ago and had been employed by various stables since the Downs was founded in 1875 No near relatives can be located Commodore was first employed by the racing firm of Churchill Johnson the Downs being named for the former Later he was valet to Col M Lewis Clark for many years presiding judge nt the tracki He also worked at one time for George J Long He had the distinction of witnessing the running of every Kentucky Derby from 1875 to 1919 1919Marty Marty Lou which won a race at Mt Sterling Ky last week is one of the few marcs to win after having two foals She is the dam of Kmnia Wcllcr h winner at New Orleans last winter and Dan Lchan who bred her has a yearling foal at Douglas Park which she threw last year Ralph which formerly raced with much success for George J Long and which killed Free Lance in a stallion fight at Bashfbrd Manor is the sire of the yearling Marty Lou will be raced through ¬ out the coming Kentucky meetings and will be taken to Havana next winter She is eight years old and until this summer had not raced for three years yearsIt It is said that jockey Mack Garner who attempted to end his life by drinking iodine at Latonin last spring will ride f6rC O Van Meter iiexl autumn He has been resting since the last week Of thL Latonia meeting
