SPEEDY MILKMAID DEATEN Whitneys Maiden Filly Vexatious an Easy Alabama Winner Favorites Deceive Throughout the Day at Saratoga Unfavor ¬ able Going a Factor j BY J L DEMPSEY DEMPSEYSARATOGA SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y August 7 Harry Payne Whitney had his name enrolled today among the winning owners of the long established Alabama Stakes that has since 1872 served as a guide to determine the most probable one entitled to cham ¬ pionship honors among the threeyearold fillies Mr Whitneys representative in the stake was Vexatious a daughter of Peter Pan Contrary only recently making her racing debut Because of being a non winner she had all the concessions allowed by the conditions of the fixture but while her lighter Impost stood her in splendid stead there is every room for belief that she would have triumphed just the same at even weights over Milkmaid and Polka Dot which brought up in sec ¬ ond and third places respectively Ambrose took Vexatious to the front soon after the barrier was released and for the first threequarters she showed the way to the others under restraint Milkmaid and Polka Dot were the closest followers Lwjth Jap amPifigJiIand Li ht far back amljidoner i Sahdef Sahdefon on Milkmaid began his challenge just before i the last turn but Ambrose was prepared for it and relaxing slightly his restraining hold on the Whitney filly she moved away again to retain her earlier lead of a couple of lengths Vexatious came into the stretch slightly wide as did Milk ¬ maid and the amount of ground that Polka Dot saved by staying close to the rail momentarily caused belief ttiat she would be a factor in the result but the hope of her supporters was short ¬ lived for once straightened for the final dash to the finish Vexatious drew away steadily and Milkmaid found her task to be too great though she struggled on gamely and beat Polka Dot by ten lengths for second place The winner was easing at the end and had a three lengths margin on the Commander Ross representative The stake had a guaranteed value of 10000 with 7265 of this sura being the winners net portion Milkmaid was an overwhelming favorite and had confident support from a majority of the big throng The winner however had a full share of support par ¬ ticularly from those who watched her initial race closely several days ago and also observed her work ¬ out after the race of a mite and a quarter BOYLE HIDES TWO WINNERS WINNERSir ir An ordinary band furnished the mile contest which was the fifth on the card and It was pro ¬ ductive of the best finish of the afternoon Kil ¬ kenny winning in the last few strides under si masterly ride by Simpson Boyle Incidentally it was the second winner of the day for the youngster He outf inished T Nolan on Gleipner in the last sixteenth and used good generalship to keep Kil ¬ kenny In the better part of the track whereas Nolan allowed Gleipner to travel through the heavier part of the course Bob Hensley ran a good race to land third place and he was directly responsible for the favorite St Quehtins defeat for he forced him to maintain a fast pace in the early running which made him an easy victim in the stretch Kil ¬ kenny was entered for 500 arid was claimed by Steve Judge for 1 00 Wi K Coes Cleopatra was the winner of the final race and was much the best for she began slowly and had to close an immense gap to take the lead but she won going away from His Choice ind La Rablee The Kentnckians were in high fettle at one stage of the race when Busy Signal smartly backed by the Hard Boots took a clear lead but the going was against her and she tired rapidly in the stretch stretchThe The early promise of additional rain gave way to bright sunshine and was responsible for another immense attendance being on hand to view the sport Those with a speculative penchant fared the worst of any day of this meeting for the choices were in total eclipse their successive failure en ¬ tailing an extra heavy loss to most at the track The course was a deceptive one being good in parts and slow and sticky in some places i iA A decision was reached after the fiftli race this afternoon to spilt tomorrows original sixth race on account of an excess number of entries and seven races will be run runBackers Backers of favorites started off inanspiciously when they selected Sum C IHIdreths Poacher as the one likely to land the inaugural dash but the best he could do was to land in third place Fators riding of him was not of the best and he had him all over the track The winner turned up in E R Bradleys unsightly Binding Tie ridden J y the diminutive Simpson Boyle who kept the filly close to the inner rail while going down the backstretch and moving into the lead on the last turn took her out into the better going in the last eighth Continued on third pace SPEEDY MILKMAID BEATEN Continued from first page and won without much trouble from Efficient The latter was prominent from the start but fell lame during the running and Ambrose had to dismount at the paddock draw gate Witli a better begin ¬ ning The Desert would have been dangerous for he closed an immense gap and was going fast at the end endM M L Schwartz furnished the favorite in the second race in Audacious on which Loftns had the mount The pair proved an appealing combination to the speculatively inclined but again was dis ¬ appointment in store for the backers for Audacious Imrtly saved third place the winner turning up in H 1C Knapps Thunderclap which showed an extra good performance in the soft going and won as his rider elected from Clean Gone Frogtown an ex ¬ pected contender began slowly and was always far back backCAMOTTFLEUH CAMOTTFLEUH DISAPPOINTS BACKERS BACKERSAnother Another jolt in store for the talent was uncorked in the third race when Camoufleur running in Wilfrid Viaus colors could do no better than the preceding two favorites and brought up in third place Camonfleiir was a confidently backed choice and lie flattered his supporters extensively in the iirly racing by maintaining a good lead but after half the distance was covered there was a sudden streak seen rushing into contention from a rear Kisilion The rush was made by Warsaw and he continued unchecked until reaching the stretch where lie steadily forged into the lead and held on well during the final eighth to win easing up from Rose dOr The latter finished gamely gamelyPerserverance Perserverance is a virtue said E R Bradley while being showered with congratulations after Rinding Ties victory in the first race It is the first race that I have won in Saratoga in four years I have always brought what I considered a good band of horses here but always something happened to them on arrival or after that caused their failure to race to their best There is a maxim that happenings always come in cycles of three and as I have experienced three years of lean in the past I am now ready for the fat fatI I have a right to believe in the cycle of three for I have had three of my managers die in a short period have had three colts go wrong on the eve of their important stake engagements and the investments in oil that I made were bad The fourth however was successful successfulIncidentally Incidentally it might be added that Mr Bradley profited extensively by Binding Ties success this afternoon afternoonThe The racer Kilkenny which won the fifth race in the colors of Mose Lowenstein changed hands after his victory Steve Judge secured him on a claim of 1600
