GOLDEN BROOM A NEW STAR Wins the Saratoga Special from End to End with Ease Sun Briar First in the Cham plain Handicap in New Track Record Time SARATOGA SPRINGS X Y August 9 Mrs Walter M Jeffords slashinglooking chestnut sou of Sweeper Zuna Golden Broom costliest of last years youngsters shied his castor into the ring this afternoon and made a positive bid for champion ¬ ship honors Xono who witnessed his performance in the Saratoga Special will deny his right to dis ¬ pute the crown with the best in his division By tacit agreement based on his unbeaten career Man o War has been heretofore proclaimed king of the twoyearolds bufin the Might of Golden Brooms easy achievement in todays race in which speedy opponents were pitted against him there became a big doubt even in the estimation of Man o Wars most ardent partisans if the Jefford rep ¬ resentative is not the Glen Riddle colts superior he is at least his equal Golden Broom in his race this afternoon left nothing to imagination His work was cleancut decisive and thorough He began fast so fast in fact that he left an impression inic iBtlsJofsonie tlwt fce tart beaten tBegate But this was not so for Panoply one of Harry Payne Whitneys pair in the race showed in front at the barriers rise but Golden Brooms high flight of early speed carried him into a clear lead in a twinkling There were misgivings by many when he was observed out in the lead by himself for in his last race he gave every evidence of having run out oh the turns and some expected him to repeat the performance but to the contrary the colt hugged the inner rail this afternoon as if instinctively knowing that it would aid him to the victory He maintained his early advantage to the stretch and when the general closing up process began he had sufficient speed in reserve to retain his advantage and at the end won under restraint from Wildair another Harry Payne Whitney representative with King Thrush of the J K L Ross establishment in third place placeBONNIE BONNIE HARY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT DISAPPOINTMENTThe The outstanding disappointment in the race was Bonnie Mary This filly that easterners but a short while back were rating as probably the best of her age raced in dull style True she was away poorly1 and lost ground by racing wide but her sendoff was due to her fractiousness at the post which will always militate against her On their respective showings hen Miss Jemima will have no difficulty in beating liounie Mary under even weights Todays stakes which is a purely sporting proposition calling for 500 a side from each entry witli half forfeit in case of failure to go to the barrier all to go to the winner amounted to 8500 net and nlate to the value of 1000 that the association added addedThe The outcome of the Rice held interest in Franco and Mr Frank Hitchcock was the first to cable to Mrs H B Duryea of the victory of Gulden Broom The colt was bred by Mrs Duryea in France his sire Sweeper being the winner of the Two Thou ¬ sand Guineas one of Englands classics carrying the colors of Herman B Duryea DuryeaWillis Willis Sharpe Kilmers great Sun Briar which as a twoyearold really inaugurated his triumphant career at this track by a series of brilliant stake victories came into his own again today when he f ully tTehfoWStrated that he is probably the best of the mature division in taking the Champlain Handi ¬ cap at n mile and an eighth in the fast time of 150 the fastest that the distance has ever been covered in on this track and reduces the forhier track record by one and twofifths seconds It is questionable if any horse in America could have beaten Sun Briar today for he won with ridiculous ease from his stablemate Exterminator The lat ¬ ter was also going easily at the end having Hoi lister safe all through the stretch drive The race was a fast one from the start with the speedy Fairy Wand triumpher over Sun Briar in their last meeting and joint holder with him of the American mile record in a race showing the way with Sun Briar and Hollister her closest attendants She continued to hold sway until straightened away for the stretch drive where Knapp called on Sun Briar and he passed into the lead with a rush Exterminator and Hollister had a brief brush for second place but it was not lasting as Exterminator raced by them in the last sixteenth and finished directly in the wake of his stablemate The stake had a guaranteed value of 3500 with the win ¬ ners share 2ti75 net netTodays Todays attendance was on a par with any former record crowd that has witnessed the sport here Fashion and wealth filled the exclusive section sectionI I and the ideal weather added to the enjoyment of the gathering The sport was wholesome and keen the different contests being stubbornly fought foughtI from the start I The withdrawal of The Brook and James A Sheri Contlnued on second pace GOLPES BRQQM A NEW STAB Continued from first page dun from the North American Steeplechase Handicap left only a quartet to rJce for the 1500 added the net portion tp the winner amounting to Jl510 Tue contest was ono of the best ever witnessed through the field the quartet making the first round and going over the obstacles in such alignment that aMblanket couhthave covered them aH After the second time over the water jump Doublet and Elysian drew out slightly and ran as a team and fenced simultaneously over the remaining jumps The weight concession of ten pounds that Elysan was in r receipt of from ppuhlctwas the tolling factor in the final drive and Mrs Ambrose Clarks colors passed the finish In front by a length Doub ¬ let beating Bughouse by five lengths for second place and Belle o the Sea being a neck further back backAssume Assume owned by John Leonard of New Orleans was handed around as a good thing in the opening j raqe and tjose whohad confidence in the tip profited extensively for he scored a lucky vic ¬ tory under a rousing ride on the part of Snndc the bcstr race that tho jockey has ridden here Out the AVay was the one favored in the Rice but Midnight Suit was best and with a stronger ride would have won Iluyues inadu the mistake of bringing him wide jntii the stretch which enabled AsbUtnefo slip tbiniiigl lietwpen Out the AVay and Midnight Sun and get up in the last few strides to get the verdict The deceptive angle was again a source of disagreement for many thought Midnight Sun had outstayed Out the AVay for second place but the fudges thouglit otherwise and gave the place to Uihlreths representative representativeCapt Capt Ral Parrs colors wliich have been uni ¬ formly tiuccesful hero this season added another purse to his string of victories when his twoyear old Bulteeye beat Overpast in the fifth race There wore fourteen staVters in it ind Bullseyes success was in the main due to Robinsons good ride for he took a daring chance to slin his mount through next to the jnuer rail while racing to the last turn and succeeding managed to save considerable ground Overcast was probably best for she fin ished with a great rush after having closed an im ¬ mense gup buC Robinsons energetic ride prevailed and
