BLUE GRASS FAIR COMES TO AN END Attendance for the Week Was .Approximately 85,000 Final Days Racing Interesting. LEXINGTON, Ky., September 5. The Blue Grass Fair Handicap, which featured the racing card for the closing day of the highly successful Blue Grass Fair, was the most interesting contest of the week. It was won in a drive by R. L. linkers Pif Jr., with John T. Irelands thrce-year-old English-bred colt. Dark Hill, second, only a length away and coming fast and so resolutely as to justify the good impression he made in his initial appearance lierc this week. In short, he demonstrated that he is a real good" horse and worthy of consideration in any company, especially when they get to running longer distances. Walter II. Pearce was third after Hocnirs retirement. This fair was more numerously attended than any ever given on these grounds, the estimate being that there were approximately 85,000 people on the grounds during the week, the crowd today being the largest Saturday crowd in the fairs history. President Louis Lee Haggin, secretary Kenner AAalker and the directors were all recipients of many congratulations. Messrs. S. E. AVells Combs, Charles S. Darnaby andD. T. Matlack, the committee in charge of the rneing, were frequently told that they must by nil means next year give as good, or better, racing program, since it has been demonstrated that it is the sport the people want. The opening race went to Breeze, which led all the way. Peccant won the second, also, in a drive. R. L. Baker being interested in the ownership of Pif Jr., Sewell S. Combs acted as presiding judge during the running of this race. The winners of the first three races were favorites, but the talent mot .defeat in the fourth. They selected Anlace. She ran forwardly for five-eighths, and tiring finished, fourth. Miss Wright winning from Churchill Downs, with Tanlac third. Another favorite, disappointed when . AAoodpile failed to finish in the money in the fifth. Lady Luxury winning handily from the . outsider, Don Jose. The closing race went to Sarasota, she racing to the front in the last .eighth and holding Ellison safe, with Prince Igor third, the three being about equal choices. The concensus of opinion is that harder, more spirited racing was never seen anywhere, and at its conclusion the fair officers expressed their gratification to presiding judge R. L. Baker and racing secretary AY II. Shelley for the excellence of the sport and for their help in making it what it was. Maj. T. C. McDowell and his horses arrived yesterday from Saratoga. High Command and Dis- are to be turned out for the remainder of Itinction the year.
