CUDGELS DEFEAT A BIG SURPRISE Midnight Sun and Slippery Elm Lead Home Boss Star in Havre do Grace Feature. HAARE DE GRACE. Md.. September 15. The Bayview Handicap, todays feature race at Havre de Jrace. furnished "a big surprise when Midnight Sun and Slippery Elm beat the heavily backed favorite. Cudgel. "The latter was top weight and was ridden by Sande. Cudgel was away slowly and at no time was he able to improve his position. He was never dangerous at any part of the race. Midnight Sun and Slippery Elm" fought it out all through the homestretch and near the end the former came with a rush and in the final drive outlasted Slippery Elm to beat him a scant half length. The winner ran the mile and a sixteenth in 1:45, equalling the track record- for the distance. Close finishes made the afternoons snort interesting. ATeto. at long odds, snatched victory from Rallyeonnell in the final strides of the second race, while another hard fought battle occurred in the third race. Duchess Lace beating Celto in the final strides after the latter had closed an immense gap. Again in the fifth only a small margin separated Hubbub and Irish Kiss at the end of an exciting struggle. Three horses changed hands after the running of the third race. J. AV. Bean claimed Celto for ,015; . K. Moore took Cromwell for 2,300, and G. AV. Forman secured Joyful for ,315. Joseph McLennan received several entries by mail this morning from Xew York for the ?lO,C00 Eastern Shore Stakes, which will be featured at Havre de Grace next Saturday. It is a two-year-6M stake at three quarters of a mile. Among those entered were the Futurity winner, Man o AVar, and Xeddam. Gad Bryan left Baltimore this morning on a hurried trip to New Orleans, where lie was called to attend a meeting of the directors of the Jefferson Parish Fair Association to perfect plans for the coming winter meeting at their course. Senor A. H. Diaz, whose extensive string -at Havre de Grace is being looked after by AVilliam McDaniel. cabled the latter that he would be here September 20 for an extended stay. News was received from Memihis this morning of the death of AV. H. Bud Median, who died at the home of his sister in Memphis several days ago. Median raced the useful filly Sister Alice on the western and Canadian circuits some few years back and was a well-known follower of the sport. The Canadian mare Belle Mahone was boosted to S 1.000 after she won on Saturday and retained by lier owner. II. D. Brown is expected here from California in a week or ten days. On his arrival announcement regarding purses and stakes to be run in Cuba next winter will be made to horsemen.
