MAD HATTER WINS MINE0LA HANDICAP Big Crowd Sees S. C. Hildreths Representative Carry Off Opening Day Feature at Jamaica. NEW YORK, N. Y., September 29, The popular Jamaica course attracted a big patronage today when the autumn meeting of the Metropolitan Jockey Club opened with tlie running of . the Miheola Handicap as the feature. This race, worth ,225 to the winner, was at a mile and a sixteenth, and attracted a field of five, R. T. Wilsons Hannibal being added, and on the strength of his good Saratoga form he was a well supported favorite. S. C. Hildreths Mad Hatter proved the winner, however, in a manner that showed he is a horse of much more than ordinary caliber. Tlie1 speedy Hannibal, followed by Audacious, made tlie early pace to the last quarter, where Fator, on Mad Hatter, came around the leaders to win going away. Mad Hatter is S. C. ilildreths dependance in the Latonia Championship Stakes, and horsemen after his victory today were optimistic as to his chances in that big race. Orderly was a mild surprise in the second, he winning from Dragon Rock and the odds-on choice Nightstick. Second in interest to the Miheola Handicap was the third race, a three-quarters handicap, in which A. K. Macombers colors . were carried to victory by Hollister, he just lasting long enough to beat the fast gaining Valor. The latter was .forced to come around the leaders on., the stretch turn and finished fast. , v Grundy, running in much improved form, had an easy task in winning.the fifth race. He showed suddenly acquired speed today throughout and won by many lengths. Jockey E. Haynes was married at Jamaica Saturday to Miss Edna Hise. The Quincy Stable wijl be shipped to Laurel Wednesday by trainer Jas. Fitzsimmons along with the horses owned by him. Hampden, C. A. Applegates two-year-old colt, was destroyed on the -advice of Dr. McCully today, due to tlie injury he received at Aqueduct. He was the only horse owned by Mr. Applegate which was not insured. Al Blute has received a letter from California stating that there are twenty-seven yearlings in California by the useful racer Enfield. Wilbur F. Smith was an arrival from Kansas Citv, Mo., and will spend "several weeks here. James .Arthur, - W. Walker and J. ..G- Wagnon were arrivals from Maryland -with jsfx- horses each. A. R. Bresler will in the future train Koh-i-Noor and Questionnaire for E. Arlington. Jockey W. Knapp was a. visitor today. He returns to Havre de Grace tomorrow. 15. Davis bid up Grundy 00 over his entered price of ,000, but failed to secure the gelding.
