FAMOUS ENGLISH JOCKEY IS DEAD LONDON, England, December 8. James Wood-burn, the well-known jockey, is dead from cancer. He gave forty years of his life to the turf, and during that period rode more than one thousand winners. He won two Lincolnshire Handicaps, four Liverpool Cups, two Manchester Cups, the Oaks, One Thousand Guineas, Boyal Hunt Cup and the Grand Prix de Paris. In 1892 he rode the late Sir John "Blundel Maples Dame President in the One Thousand Guineas, in which the same owner had Stifflouse, ridden by T. Loates, Before the race the two jockeys had a bet of a. suit of clothes that one would beat the other, and, although Stiff-louse, was favorite, Woodburn managed to win by a head on his mount, which started at 33 to 1. In 1802, at the Liverpool spring meeting. Wood-burn accomplished the "hat trick," winning the Union Jack Stakes, Prince of Wales Plate and the Molyneux Stakes.
