AN ENGLISH ARCHBISHOPS LOTTERY A successful lottery was once operated by an Archbishop of Canterbury. This was in 1753, when the archbishop organized a lottery to raise the. money nquired for the purchase of the library of Sir Hans Sloaiie for the state. A hundred thousand tickets at S15 each were issued, and ,000,000 distributed in prizes, ranging from 50 to 50,000. So successful was the venture that more than 00,000 was left in the hands of the archbishop, part of which was devoted to building the first portion of the British museum.
