i I SPORTING PRESERVE BY ILLINOIS MAN ROCK ISLAND, 111., December 2S. In the hope of protecting the migratory birds and other small game of the middle west now threatened witli extension. J. M. Welcli of. Itock Island has purchased Scheck Island, six miles south of this city, in the Mississippi River, and will convert it into a permanent preserve and where hunting will be forever barred. The island contains 31.r acres and has a heavy growth of timber and brush, ideal for the birds, rabbits, squirrels atid small animals that may be propagated. The new owner will transform the island into a public park, free to all. but no firearms will be permitted and watchmen will see that hunters do not land upon the tract. Boy Scouts and similar organizations will be permitted to camp there upon the agreement not to disturb the birds or animals. It is believed by Welch that if a series of these preserves are opened; through the middle west the game birds and animals will be saved from extinction. Efforts will be made to interest the legislatures of the . states of the middle west to finance olinllnr projects.
