INCREASE IN STAKE VALUES Kentucky Jockey Club Announces Striking Program for This Year. % Kentucky Derby the Headliner with 0,000 Added — New Stakes Provided. i ♦ i LOTISYILLE. Ky.. January 21.— One of Hw greatest array --f itakea ever offered by any jockey club in America is that announced by tlic Kentucky hockey Club for the - ing and summer racing of 1880. Announoeme-nt if the forthcoming stakes to be run at Lexington. Cluircliill Downs ami La-tnni.-i was made tea tght by Col. Matt .1. Winn, vice-president and general manager of the Kentucky .Ini key Club, upon his return from Lexington, where lie conferred with president Johnson X. Camden. The liberal offer in stakes is understood to be in keeping with the policy of Senator Camden and Colonel Winn to distribute to the horsemen and breeders money in proportion to the patronage ao-i urded racing. The unusual prosjierity which attended racing last year is reflected in the increased outlay of the jockey club. Chief among the events of the coming spring season is the Kentucky Derby, which this year will have 0,000 in added money, making its probable total value in excess of 5,888. This historic race now becomes not only Americas leading three-year old fixture from a sentimental standpoint, but one of the most valuable. Only a few years ago the turf world was stirred nUen the added money value of the Kentucky tK-rhy was increased to 0,000. It later was jumped to X1.Y000, nnd then to 0,000. Its eminence was assured even at that figure, but the progressive management of the jockey club was not satisfied. The new figure set by Messrs. Camden and Winn leaves no doubt as to the value of the race being in keeping with its country - wide prominence. The total that will be given away in stakes next spring and summer by the Kentucky Jockey Club is 1172,300. This, of course, does not include the daily purses and overnight handicaps.
