Cal., January IT. — Pacing in the Hawaiian Islands began January 1 on the Island of Maui, when a program of fifteen events was run off before a large crowd. The meeting was for one day. The next racing will be held on the islands in June at Hilo. Phuis have been made for a four-day meeting at Honolulu, starting July 4. The races at the Kahului race course on the Island of Maui attracted hundreds of planters, cow-box-, plantation employes and the people from the neighboring towns. The weather was unpromising, but failed to dampen the ardor of the islanders. The contests were run on a muddy track. Some of the horses in the races for thoroughbreds foiBMrly raced on the mainland. Others were bred in the i-lands. Quite a number of the horses are sons and daughter- *f brood mares taken down lo tin-islands several years ago by George W. Berry. Copra, winner of a three-quarters of a mile dash, was bred on the islands, being by Silon Coppit. the latter by The Judge— Lucille II. Coppit raced hereabouts some years back and was taken over by Berry. There was a surprise in the feature event of the afternoon— a in lie and a half affair — when the seven-year-old gelding Uobert Lee, California -bred, was beaten by Casteney. The winner is owned by Uobert W. Shingle, a banker of Honolulu. Earlier in the day Robert Lee had beaten Casteney in a mile race." The feature race had a value of ,000. Mr-. Jack London, widow of the novelist, rode in the cowgirl race, but failed to get a place. The Maui traefc has no grandstand, but plans are being made for the erection of one before the next race meeting. The results were as follows: First Pact — One mile. open. Robert Lee won; Casteney second: Mary .1.. third. Time. 1:52. Second Race One mile, for horses owned by Portuguese. La F.strella won; Slow Co second; Venua third. Time. 1 :." s. Third Race — One mile. Hawaiian bred. Waimea won: Will Owen second: Dick Tilburn finished third, but was disqualified for fouling the winner. Time. 1:38. Fourth Race— One-half mile, cowboys. Kaonoula. Ranch entry won. Time. 58%. Fifth Race Three eighths mile, juvenile cowboys. Errol von Tempskys entry won. Time. 41%. Sixth Race — Five-eighths mile. open. Ypres won. Copra second. Time. 1:10. Seventh Race — Half mile, mules. Kaonoulu Ranch entry won. Time. 1:12%. F.ighth Race --Three-eighths mile, cowgirls. Inez MePhocs entry won: Arniine vou Tempsky s entry second: I.orna von Tempekj ■ entry third. Mrs. Jack London rode in the race. Ninth Race — One mile, Japanese. Okana won; Suda second.
