NEW ORLEANS. La.. January 124. rising the end of the first half today, tin- Fair Croiinds race meeting is assuming larger proportions than ever. :in the big racing is yet ti whip. Three more 15.000 added stakes arc to bo run during Hie Baal half, the first of which will he the Crescent City Handicap, at one and sae-eighth miles, on Saturday. January 31. Entries for this stake closed today. The other two stake events are the Martin Rehr-inan Cup. a handicap at two miles, for Saturday. February 7. and the Mardi Graa Handicap for Tuesday February 17. the closing day of the meeting. The former is named in honor of Mayor Martin F.chrman. and is nil annual affair. It formerly was a selling stake, hut this season it was decided to make it a handicap so that the better grade of horses could participate. The winning owner will receive a silver loving cup, the trophy to be presented by Mayor Rehrman. Muddy, heavy or slow going prevailed for two solid weeks at the Fair Crounds. and during that time the course i,v in such wretched condition, especially along the inner rail, that horses had to 10 ulniosi to the extreme outside in order to ■ in The shortest way home was the hardest way. and the best evidence of this is that only two horses. Almino. a 100 to 1 chance, and Grumpy, won next to the rail in twelve racing days. Confirmed rail runners were at a disadvantage, and many a one of them faded away to nothing when they turned into the stretch and tried the rail route. Nothing sensational in the two-year-old Ha* has ■Ma uncovered yet. but only a small portion of the youngsters have started, due to the bad track. The representation of the KentuckiHiis in these races has bee* meager, and in the first seventeen days of racing not a Mae Crass owned two-year-old win. They are evidently saving their reported good ones lor fast track racing, of which it is hoped there will be plenty in the Bear future. SILVER SPRINGS GOOD COLT. W. A. Burttschell has shown a colt which seems to be of fair class in Silver Springs, a chestnut sen of Aeronaut -Sweet nearer, which is owned by .1. W. Rean of Washington. 1. C. TMa youngster was beaten a nose in his first start by Loyal Sweeper, one of the Harry Payne Whitney juveniles, and his defeat was attributed to his swerving into the deep going, which caused him to tire slightly near the end. He easily won his second race in a fair field. Hi is a fast beginner, anil has a high flight of early speed. Rurttschcll also has the five two year olds owned by .1. J. Kean of Louisville. Ky. Mr. Kean came here recently and arranged for their transfer from J. W. Johnson, who formerly trained them. 1.. A. Jones of lmnell. Mo., who brought a band of two -year olds here of his own breeding, is confident that Marguerite Dixon, a daughter of llarrigan Tender Rloom. a double winner in four starts, will prove one of the best of her age this winter. She runs like a game filly. :uiil is always going fast at tin- finish. In eae of her winning races she came from behind to get the verdict by a nose in the last stride, while in the other she began in from and was never in danger. The New York State Racing Commission and the Kentucky turf governing body are both represented here at the present time, the former by ex t on grcssman ;. V. I.oft and the latter by J. I. Keene. Mr. I.oft said that the outlook for the sport in New York during the coming season could not he brighter, while Mr. Keene is of the opinion that Kentucky i in for its best! year. The lior-es owned by Mr. Loft are wintering in New York under the care of trainer Max Hirseh. and the star of the outfit is On Watch, winner of the Oueen City Handicap, worth S7.900 net. at Latonia last autumn. He will he named for the Kentucky Derby next spring, and his owner is confident that he in ill proe himself of Derby caliber. A long route of ground seems to be his forte, as the Qaecp City Handicap was at one mile, and he came from behind to win it easily. From here Mr. I.oft will go to Paha Roach. Fla.. and later on he and his party will lake a trip to Havana. Mr. Keene. who is associated with C. Brace Head of Louisville in the ownership of the Wal-deek Stable, has a few horses racing here. ThfJ uc in charge of his brother. Hamilton Keene. The main division of tie- Watdeck Stable, including quite a few well bred and reported good iwo-ye.ir olds, is in Kentucky. ENMITY COST OWNER 00. laet how good Enmity and Soldat de Verdun really are is an enigma. The former won his Bret two starts at the Fair Grounds, and he alas won two races at Jefferson Park, While the latter won lour races ill a row in the first seventeen days of the present meeting, and in his other start was beaten a neck. Enmity has a victory over lack Hare Jr. to his credit in the Powers Memorial Handicap, and while it was of the tluky variety, it cannot be denied that he ran a grand race. Enmity is about the best MOO thoroughbred invest no lit in many a day. J. P. Conley gave |M0 i /or him last year. He has been racing only since , September :; l. and has won s; times. His total Mirse earnings in three and one-half mouths were S4.lj.5l. ,1 Soldat de Verdaa started eii miming with cheap ■idling platers, but now he has worked his way out of that lass, and he seems |o run better as he . meets better buietS Bfcl gaiiicin-s cannot ! •• que* t r .mil either, as lie has stood MTeral grueling stretch dines Just when the S.
