Kntrios lo all the stake races to be run in the course of the spring meetings at Lexington. Churchill Downs and Latonia will close at midnight of Monday. March 1. as will also one itn-portant stake race to be run at the Latonia fall meeting. It is a slake list bound to prove intensely alluring to all owners and in C— BCqatUH, -Hie to secure the nomination of practically every desirable race horse in the country. No new st;,ke races have been provided for the Lexington meeting, the improvi mint there being in the way of greatly um reused values. This is the Proctor Knott Handicap for three-year-olds at a mil- and a quarter, with 1920.sh,000 added, an importai.l and valuable addition. Put the main feature in the Churchill Downs program is the raising of tin- en-downient of the Kentucky Derby from the 0-gd0 of last year to 0,000. This move will make its ml value nearly, ir not quite, equal to that of the world famous Kpsoni Derby, which is 2,250. If the Kentucky Derby of this year receives a hundred noniinatiiii.s and lias twenty starters, its net value to the winner will be syt jt probably will receive the hundred entries; it should. They should be productive of memorable races. Another cum- of liberal enterprise has been in the increase of ad led money to the Independence Handicap from its ,000 of last year to 5,000 this year, a step that makes it the Brest valuable handicap race ef North America, consequently one in be striven for by the best hor-es of the United State-. Tin ir owners simply cant gel away from such a value. They will have to come, especially since it i- backed up by four other richly endowed handicaps, for three-year-olils .hi. Il seems that it would have been fitting to extend a measure of the -ami- liberality lo the Latonia Derby, which is left al its old figure. It is not thai its sl.i.OOO added does not sill fice to make it an object of solicitude to any owner of a g 1 1 hi co-year -old. bin that il is fully a- desc-rving of tin- fostering care of the Kentucky Jockey Club as the Kentueky Derby, its being at the correct Derby distance and mare truly a test of ability to stay, being a valuable consideration. However, it may cease in for attention in another year and in the meantime the Latonia sprint meeting will be a marvel of tempting opportunities. One of the big races to close in the litonia list is for its autumn meeHag, being the Queen city Handicap. at a mile, for two-year-olds, with SloOlMl added.
