FINE CALIFORNIA BLOODSTOCK YOUNG SCIONS Of FRIAR ROCK AND DISGUISE ON J. H. ROSSETERS WIKIUP RANCH AN IMPRESSIVE APPEARING BAND, WITH GREAT RACING POSSIBILITIES IN PROSPECT By EXILE What few days this time I have spent in California have already convinced nie that blood-■ock of the best sort can be bred here. Never before have I had an opportunity to visit a bloodstock nursery in California where everything was not sacrificed to size and early maturity. However, here on the YVikiup Ranch, where Friar Rock and Disguise hold sway, more rational methods are pursued, and the youngsters, though of tine size and conformation, are not overdone in condition. One and all are in the best health possible, have any amount of room to mam. and if some of them do not turn out to be race horses of the first class I wish to promptly resign as prognosticator. California as a horse raising state, and this western coast section in particular, on account if the proximity of the sea. cannot well be excelled, and it is only by the breeding route that horse racing can again be established in California. There is any amount of room as yet out iiere, and if tobacco wins the day in Kentucky, as now seems probable, what better country ban this could be asked for breeding the thoroughbred hone. The only danger in this mild climate is that the forcing process is tempting, with the Saratoga sales ring ever in view. Here on the Wikiup Ranch the pastures are hilly certainly many would eaO them mountainous the valley land is devoted to raising hops and prunes; but it is on the hillsides that the thoroughbred mares and yearlings develop bone and sinew in the quest for sustenance, and right well does it seem to agree with them, for nowhere in Kentucky have I se?n a band of better grown yearlings than in the list of Wikiup youngsters appended. Climatic conditions here, too. seem to agree with the stallions Friar Rock and Disguise, the latter of which, even though his years number twenty-three, is as handsome as ever, as fresh is paint and does not look to be ■ day over fifteen. •Here is Friar Rocks pedigree: Stoekuell 3 F. Just about my beau-ideal of what a thoroughbred stallion should be. and one which wound up his turf career by winning the Saratoga Cup, is the half-brother to the champion Fair Play, in appearance hard to beat, and is possessed of a really good head, clear hazd eye. strong, muscular neck, good spring to his rib. full dinner pail, a smooth quartered horse, carrying a rood flag, and legs the best, tapering from trunk to coronary band, from which grow feet hard to excel. So far so good. What does I riar Rocks pedigree tell us? A male descendant of Stockwell via St. Albans and Springfield, a son of Rock Sand, whose dam. Roquebrune. an tin-usually fast mare, is by St. Simon, from the One Thousand Guineas winner St. Marguerite, daughter of Herniit. Rare old Fairy Gold What a gold mine she proved to be for Major Belmont ! A daughter of the Derby winner Bend Or. herself a winner of the Woodcote Stakes, snd dam. besides Friar Rock, of the Great Ebor Handicap and Ascot Gold Vase winner. Golden Measure; Fair Play. Flittergold and others. Fairy Golds dam. Dame Masham. is a daughter of , he Two Thousand Guineas winner Galliard. which, although an excitable horse, scored a big hit 99 a sire in the land of his adoption France. Galliard wtm bred to be a success as a sire. :or his sire was Galopin and his dam, Mavis, was by the best brood mare sire of them all Macaroni. Pauline, which follows, was sired by Herniit. and next in line comes l.ady Masham. dam of Timothy and Pater, by the Matchem sire Brother to Strafford, son of Young Melbourne, and so to Maid of Masham. from which this branch of the Old Vintner mare family ikea Us name. All branches of this Maid of Masham family, in which the names of Voting Melbourne and his sons appear, have been and are most productive of the best class of trainers, but when minus the Melbourne touch results have not been quite so good; for instance, the line of Black Star, from which Hessian and other near good horses come, is without the Melbourne strain; the lesson, therefore, is obvious, when Matchem blood in the Maid of Masham family is lacking supply it. Perhaps I am seeing Friar Rock through rose-colored spectacles. I freely admit having al Mraya had a partiality for the horse, but really this California springlike weather would make anyone feel cheery, and besides Friar Rock proved himself on the race course, is more than good looking, his pedigree hard to beat, and he stamps his progeny with much of his own individual excellence. I am. therefore, willing to lay the odds that in two years time Friar Rock wi 1 have attained to almost as much distinction as has his illustrious half-brother.
