There were 248.1X1 of these animals employed during the great war. -with a casualty of C2.8B3 animals. heaMei some 700 that were lost at sea. Horses and mules played a most important part in military operations throughout the war area. Contrary to popular opinion, they were largely used for carrying supplies right up lo the front, traveling iu zones where it was quite impossible to work motor iran-porls. A large amount of artillery was entirely dependent u|hni horse or mule rraaaperta-tiou. One of Ihe grave problems in the war was the keeping of a sufficient supply of animals constantly available to do the important work which was necessary for success. General lershing recently paid the following fine tribute to the horse and the part that he played in the war: "The army horses and mules proved of inestimable value in prosecuting the war to a successful conclusion. They were found in all theaters of preiiarat ion and operations, doing their silent hot faithful work without the faculty of hoping for any reward or commendation."
