I I I I I ! I i NO STEEPLECHASES AT HAVRE DE GRACE Course Not Up to Requirements of Governing Body — Long Distance Races to Be Featured. NFW YORK. N. V.. Match 9.— Owing to the steeplechase course ai Havre not meeting with a few minor requisites prescribed by the National Steeplechase anl Hunt Association rules, there will not be any steeplechases run during the spring meeting on that course. The Steeplechase ami Hunt A-soeiation requires certain changes to be made and it is impossible Io make them in time for the [ coming spring meeting. This decision was also aided by the fact that owing to the intense winter few cross-country horse- will be ready for racing so early in the year. However, immediately after the spring meeting the jumping course will be reconstructed to meet all requirements and will be ready for the regular fall meeting. In arranging Bowie and Havre de Crace programs Joseph McLennan, the secretary at both tracks, will inaugurate a rub- devised by him at New Orleans which will encourage owners and trainers to , train their her sea to go to longer distances, which coincides with the wi-hes of the turf powers and breeders. The rule will read somewhat as follows: "In all race- at thi- meeting, except handicaps, horses which have never won at a distance of a mile or more, three year olds will be allowed three pounds, four -yean -oafs ami over five paamda, in all taces at a mile or more." This rule proved popular with trainers at the Fair Grounds. One particular Instance can be cited, that of Marie Mil ler. which was unbeaten at New Orleans on account of her never having gone a mile or over and which brought out the fact that she could go that distance if required. Her races at New Orleans have made her a more valuable mare than it was ever denned she would be. It is the first time such a rule has been tried on tracks under ihe Jurisdiction of the lackey Club. This rule will act in a -imilar way to the apprentice allowance in selling race-and as an inducement to owners to educate their banes to go longer distances.
