AN ENGLISH ESTIMATE OF MAN 0 WAR His Ancestral Mate Was Not Successful in England Although Quite So in This Country West Australian will always be famous as the first racer to secure the Triple Crown the Two Thousand Guineas Derby and St Leger which he accomplished in 18r for his breeder Mr Howes and lit was also undoubtedly a good horse He was however not a stud success and probably the best racer descended from him is the now American threeyearold Man o War Hred by Major August Pelmont at the Nursery Stud the son of Fair Play was sold as a yearling to Mr Kiddle at Sara ¬ toga for SOOO and in August last this gentleman refused twenty times that amount from Mr Moil fort Jones There appears little doubt that Man o War which ran ten times is the best twoyear old seen in the States since neverbeaten din was carrying all before him in 107 and he is also a wonderfully game one as he showed when failing by a half length to concede fifteen pounds to Ipset in the San ford Memorial at Saratoga as the colt was terribly hampered otherwise he would have won easily The nine races which Man o War won included the Futurity Stakes and lie earned in all SSSLO for his owner So far as our Stud Hook is concerned however Man o War is not eligible because of Spendthrifts pedigree in the female line although this used to be accepted as instanced by Kings Courier a grandson of Spendthrift 1 well remember seeing the lastnamed handsome chestnut horse whose feet were bad and shelly carrying Mr Krones colors in the Cambridgeshire of 1SSO Then only four years he was burdened with 114 pounds owing to the good form he had shown in America but in spite of having the serv ¬ ices of Fred Archer the horse started at 100 to 1 and finished last lastThis This was the only time Spendthrift ran here but he did well at the stud in his native land ere dying in the October of 11100 the same mouth twentyone years previously that his sire Australian had died The latter a chestnut sou of West Australian was foaled iu ISiiS and being bought by A Keene Kichards as a foal he was sent to Ken ¬ tucky with his dam There was a brother to him in England at the time also named Australian he being a biv colt foaled In 18o7 hat was sent to Sydney N S W in 1810 Itoth were bred Uy Mr vV K Duncombc and sons of Kmilia Man o War is a chestnut like his father Fair Play which is by Hastings a brown son of Spendthrift dam the chestnut Fairy Cold by that glorious chestnut Pend Or Man o Wars dam the bay Mahubah now ten years old is by the brown Kock Sand Merry Token a bay daughter of tin bay Derby winner Merry Hampton Farther back maternally the coll traces to an always unnamed mare by rnderhand The Slayers Daughter by Cain which bred by Mr Manfield and foaled in 1SIKJ never ran and her ancestry is not attractive but she produced nineteen foals before dying in 1SSS including a good many winners among which were Fabiola Monsieur de Paris Thirkleby and Tippler It would be interesting to know how the American crack would compare in merit with our champion Tetratema whose speed however is in the opinion of his trainer not so phenomenal as that of his sire The Tetrarch Horse and Hound
