NORTHERN ELK HAVE GREAT KING The king of all the elk surviving on the North American continent is believed to be the leader of a herd of SOlio animals on the Biding Mountain re ¬ serve in western Manitoba ManitobaThis This magnificent specimen of a dying race was reported by woodsmen sent out recently by the Manitoba government to take a census of the herd After a closeup view of the noble beast they esti ¬ mated the spread of its main antlers at eighty inches believed to be the greatest in the world With the prongs included they declare the eighty inches would be greatly increased The great buck ac ¬ cording to the woodsnuii is in his prime and in physical proportions stands out in the herd like a veritable monarch monarchThe The Biding Mountain herd is one of the two great herds of elk left on the continent Protected by law and carefully tended it is living sleek and fat this winter while the great American herd of o0 animals is said to be starving in the Jackson Hide country on the borders of Yellowstone Park in Wyoming Killing WyomingKilling Mountain lies west of Lake Manitoba on the Canadian National Railway and from any of its higher slopes the elk can gaze out on all sides upon some of the most highly developed farming regions of Canada So the new order trenches upon the old
