MADDERS BREEDING VIEWS Frank About His Own Mistakes Tells What England Has Done Kentucky Turfmen Says the Win ¬ ners of Our Leading Races Fail to Reproduce Themselves AVhnt John K Madden has to say on horse breed ¬ ing is always interesting and his opinions fre ¬ quently at variance with those of other experts bring out discussions which work to the benellt of the thoroughbred and through that useful typo to horse breeding in general generalSeen Seen recently at Hamburg Place he said Our best horses do not lack either speed courage or stamina as compared with the Knglish thoroughbred I ut in general the Knglish have found the secret of intelligent scientific mating which has not been complctelv revealed to the American breeder breederMy My own experience as a breeder leads me to theseconclusions The records of the winning sires of two great classics the Kentucky Derby and the Fnturitv prove them There must be something radically wrong with our methods when the practi ¬ cal failure of these in the stud is admitted Not me of the fortyfive Kentucky Derby winners with Hie notable exception of Halma sire of Mr Mc ¬ Dowells AllanaDalo ever sired a Derby winner i It hough all of them had their breeding opportunity Vo winner of the Futurity the largest lixed event in this country liasilsyet sired a winner of this race raceThis This does not reflect on the quality of our thoroughbreds but it places the responsibility for tlil failure where it belongs at the doors of the breeders who having once bred Derby and Futurity winners have mated them so unwisely that they have not been able to reproduce their kind kindWHAT WHAT ENGLAND HAS DONE DONEKnglish Knglish results are just the opposite resumed Mr Madden Many Kosom Derby winners have been successful sires Siinstar Kock Sand Orby Ard Patrick Flying Fox Persimmon Isinglass and Dliimoml Jubilee the last named especially in South America In England it is an accepted fact that the winners of the classics can and do transmit in great nart their own racing excellence to their off ¬ springs This cannot be an accidental thing for year after year Knglish Derby winners prove their worth as sires by producing sons and daughters which in their turn capture the great events of the turf This is not the result of haphazard breeding It is directly due to the great care and skill which the Knglish breeders devote to the mating of their great sires The King of Kngland breeds and races thoroughbreds Karl Kosebery an Knglish premier was proud to own a Derby winner The colors of the noblest families in Kngland are seen on the turf The ablest men in that country have made a study of the breeding and mating of thoroughbreds with the result that they accomplish what we have sig ¬ nally failed to do make the winners of the classic races produce winners of the classics classicsMADDENS MADDENS OWN EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCEI I will be frank with you about my own expe ¬ rience Too many raise horses too few breed them I have made some humiliating mistakes There is nothing so discouraging as a wellbred failure I can give you several sharp illustrations In 1100 I purchased in Kngland Sandringham brother to those two good horses Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee both Derbv winners I foolishly put price and pedi ¬ gree before merit Another instance I bought Tho Scribe son of the Knglish Derby winner Isinglass out of the Oaks and St Leger winner Memoir by St Simon Again I was tempted by price and pedi ¬ gree and lost sight of merit I had the same sad experience with Planudes I bought the horse be ¬ cause he was a son of the great St Simon and had the Oaks winner Lonely for his dam damMy My mistake was in not having purchased a horse like Mr Helmonts great sire Kock Sand or Mr Whitneys Meddler or more stallions like Star Shoot and Friar Kock then I should have done something worth while whileIts Its simple to get into lino AVe have a better climate better grass and more acreage than Kng ¬ land and there is no reason why with the proper attention to the mating of race horses we should not Jirocd more thoroughbreds the equal of the best produced In Kngland
