STERLING SHOWS WELL AT EXERCISE Gallops tho Derby Distance in the Best Time Recorded This Spring IoriSVILLK KV April in Today was a busy day for the Kentucky Derby candidates at Church ¬ ill Downs and all the more important ones were given good workouts ranging in distance from seven eighths to one and onequarter miles The track was in excellent condition ami this enabled some of the eligibles to make faster time than has been the rule The best Derby gallops were those of Sterling which covered a mile and a quarter in 11 Prince Pal which ran a mile in 1H31 and Prookholt which worked seveneighths of a mile in 1 W Among the others seen working this morning were Ou Watch a mile in 1C Donnacona mile in 1IS Sams Hoy mile in lir Kouleau threequarters in ULMand Klaek Hackle seveneighths in lWr lWrSterlings Sterlings mile and a quarter was the fastest made by any of the Derby prospects here to date this spring He ran the half mile in iJ three quarters in 11 H seveneighths in 1SO mile in 145 mile and an eighth in lr7f and pulled up in good condition conditionTodny Todny marked Hrookholts first good workout since his arrival here from Hot Springs and he ran like a good colt He ran the lirst quarter in ir half mile in W and the threequarters in l17t and was not extended extendedSams Sams Hoy surprised the work watchers by the manner in which lie ran a mile in 11 V This colt is being trained by Walter Hopkins for John Middleton prominent financier of this city and formerly of the wellknown racing firm of Middle ton Jones Mr Middleton was at the track this morning for the first time this year to witness his Kentucky Derby eligible work workJohn John M Koegan track superintendent at Lexing ¬ ton came here today to confer with the horsemen hi an effort to save stable room at that track He urged them to take only the horses with them that are ready to race as applications for several hun ¬ dred more stalls than the f othiLrim traik Inis have 11 11NEW NEW MILE CHUTE COMPLETED COMPLETEDThe The new mile chute at Churchill Downs was this morning formally turned over as completed by tiie contractor who built it Harrows and a huge roller were immediately placed on it and it will be ready for the horses within a short time timeTrainer Trainer Coorgo Harnes plans to ship a division of the C W Clark horses to Lexington Monday Sway and Pictor Camden Handicap eligibles will be among those taken Jockey Steve Wida will go at the same time timeWilliams Williams Bros will have no representation at l lexington this spring as trainer K I Williams says his horses are not training in such a manner as to indicate that they will be ready to nice at that meeting Joe rmensetter is another who will await the opening of the Downs meeting before getting into action actionMax Max Hirsch will ship the W Loft horses to Lexington next Thursday He said that lie lias not decided definitely which ones he will take but Dnnuacona and On Watch will be among them themThe The horses owned by Mose Coldblatt which were scheduled for shipment to Ixxington today did not get away because of the failure of P T Chinn to vacate the stalls at the Le Lewere were assigned to the Coldblatt racers Chinns thoroughbreds are held at Lexington by the rail ¬ road strike and they will leave for the Kast as soon as the railroads will accept them
