FILLY WHICH MA Y WIN THE DERB DISTINCTION GIFTED WITH SUPERIOR SPEED BRED Oi THE MOST APPROVED LINES AND NOW WELL ADVANCED IN HER TRAINING Distinction bay filly yes bay without white anywhere so far as I could POO Last year Distinction presented rather a scragly appearance but handsome is as handsome does yon know and Distinction as witness her Latonia race and Saratoga trial can run Never a beauty Distinction last year looked less like with her rather wiry coat the cut of a really highclass race filly than any I know but her Latonia success and morning gallops thereafter are proof that looks count for but little in horse racing This year I am pleased to report Distinction as having grown into a really strong rugged mare one too which is as near fit as anything trained on the Lexington course Only a few days ago she galloped her throequarters in faster time than it takes a number of them to win races find it would not at all sur ¬ prise me to see the all bay daughter of The Manager find Alanarka turn out to be one of the racing finds of the year yearOn On her first and only appearance in public last year Distinction on June 10 at Latonia proved al ¬ together too much for the previous winner Marjorie Hynes ontfooting the chestnut to the finish by an easy two lengths in the new American time for the liveeighths of VJ On the authority of jockey Jack Howard who is now associated in training with Distinctions owner and breeder Mr T C McDowell 1 say that she retains all of her twoyeaiiold speed and as she was not overdone in a racing way at that age and is bred on the best approved lines all will have this year Distinction to reckon with anytime anywhere anywhereWhy Why do I say Distinction is bred on the best approved lines In the first place because of the fact she is bred Eclipse to Herod It matters not what anyone says or thinks turf history tells us that the great majority of the best were and are bred one the outcross blending of the blood plan of mating matingThe The Manager Distinctions sire is of Hermit descent and a member of the best American taproot family ilimp that of JljiiuWest adithi3 ilsoJhef niily C HoiiHrush tli uauli stallionipall iijn to head the winning American sire list which does not trace to a figure taproot It is all well to go on spouting about the superiority of the thoroughbred horse as bred in this country and to all those who say this I say prove it itDistinctions Distinctions dam Alanarka though she did manage to break out of the maiden ranks raced witli poor success Alanarka however is of Hanover descent through AlIanaDnle and Halma her dam Monarka a more than good winner by the St Klnise horse Prince of Monaco Hermit and Kingfisher com ¬ bination here and the next dam Narka dam of that good race filly Spirituelle by Macduff son of that prince of brood mare sires and Herod horse Macaroni and Distinction a member of the Hurton Harb family As the names of Hanover Ponnie Scotland Lexington Hermit Kingfisher Knquirer Hutcancer and Macaroni all of them good brood mare sires appear close up in Alnimrkas pedigree why then should she not make a success of it as a brood mareV The fact is as Mr Madden has told you more care must be exercised in brooding if failure in bloodstock breeding is to be less frequent frequentDoubtless Doubtless all of us who go racing at Lexington will for ourselves have a chance to see Distinction in action but whether it has yet been decided to let her take her chance for the Kentucky Derby I am un ¬ aware However a filly in Kegret has won the race before so there is a possibility this year of the finish being confined to two members of the gentler sex in Constancy and Distinction DistinctionJust Just before walking across the infield this morning to have a peep at Distinction Mr Daly showed me Mr and Mrs Jeffords horses which he has in charge among them the Saratoga Special winner and Derby horse Golden Proom One of the fastest if not the fastest horses I saw race last year was Golden Hrooni and Mr Daly now has him in firstrate condition and well along in his training For my part last year I was afraid the blaze face whitelegged chestnut would run to bulk and size but I was pleased to see he had lined down considerably the muscles of his thighs running well down into his hocks and he i strong of neck wide between the eyes plenty of breathing space strong jaw and best of all his feet are now iiv far better condition than I ever expected to see them No doubt Golden Hroom will be given a race here in Lexington and if he is as good as he looks will be hard to beat and if he can stay the distance must be formidable in the Derby especially as he is yet another bred Kclipse to Herod HerodAll All of the horses which Mr Daly has in charge present a vigorous and healthy appearance and I was particularly pleased to see my yearling favorite the chestnut sister to St Augustine had well ful ¬ filled her last August promise Then there was the chestnut Wild Heather by Light Hrigade Wild Thistle to see a really good colt and a big one too and one which some day will make up into a grand horse and so we passed on to Hoodwink a deep chestnut sixteenthree a show horse if ever there was one of cammanding mien and on my remarking on the sleek glossiness of his coat Mr Daly said Thats nothing wait till you see the one next door and on the blanket being stripped from Koutledge 1 beheld what 1 take to be the besthaired horse I have yet seen and the satiny sheen of whose coat alone well repaid me for my mornings pilgrimage Hermit r
