TROYTOWN A SUPERB STEEPLECHASER Liverpool Grand National Winner Has a Half Sister in This Country in tho Marc Stonechase Those who are fond of steeplechasing will no doubt be interested In learning something of a more intimate nature than the cables carried in an ¬ nouncing that the noted Irish jumper Troytowu had won the Liverpool Grand National This race which is regarded the world over as the supreme test for jumping horses calls for everything a horse possesses and Jhe man who rides in it must be as fit as his horse horseThe The victory of Troytown is of special interest to many New Yorkers as his half sister Stone chase herself a good winner in Ireland Is now in this country having been donated to the Itrccd ing liurcau of the Jockey Club by Messrs Charles and M L Schwartz in 1918 The mare was placed In the State Constabulary and for a time was located at the Itatavia station She is a superb creature standing more than sixteen and onehalf hands and possessing a world of quality She has failed to get with foal to date but will be bred again this spring springIn In commenting on Troytown Vigilant has the following to say in The Sportsman SportsmanAbout About this lime last year I hazarded the prophecy that Liverpool had shown us a Grand National winner in Troytown That was after seeing him go round the country twice without a mistake for it was no fault of his that he went the wrong course after landing on the race course the first time Major Gerards horse has vindicated that high opinion at the fist time of asking and now more than ever will his enthusiastic Irish admirers declare as they did before the race that he is the best horse ever sent out of their country They may be right but more soberminded judges would doubtless quote Cloister Manifesto and Jerry M as something far out of the common Each of these lobbed home under 175 pounds which is u task Troytown has yet to accomplish accomplishNOT NOT AT KIS BEST YET YETIt It may well be within his reach next year for there is no denying he is a real smasher with youth on his side and not yet come to his prime which should fall due in the next two years that is to say at eight or nine years old I should shouldthink think he is the biggest horse that ever woi I Iit it was his weight and momentum which added to the handling of Mr J It Anthony enabled him to recover himself after chesting the fifth fence from home Notwithstanding his great size he shows plenty of quality and is beautifully pro ¬ portioned all through There is every reasoji to expect that he will go on improving and I predict that 175 pounds will not stop him next year all being well though he will have to meet Poethlyn at even weights It was bad luck for Potliclyn to fall at the first fence after his splendid record of victories but he could not take the liberty that Troytown did and survive For Troytowns fencing ability much of the credit is accorded to the Hermit blood inherited by his sire Xria but it seems to me a closer claim is that of the wonderful jumping sire Ascetic who was responsible for his dam Diane but whichever it is there is the combination which could not be improved on
