NATIVEBRED SIRE GIVEN PREFERENCE Palo Alto and His Progeny in High Favor at the Elmwood Stock Farm SAX FRANCISCO Cal June 21 AVhen the familiar question Whats your pick was ad ¬ dressed today to Christen Christcnsen owner ot Little Margrave Stud Essex England on a visit to C T Boots Elmwook Stock Farm Santa Clara County after he had inspected the stallions on the picturesque place belonging to A K Macomber and to Mr Boots he unhesitatingly answered answeredThat That wellknit fellow there pointing to Palo Alto son of the Hanover horse Heywood and the Ormonde mare Rosormonde that has not been of forded the greatest of opportunities in late years In selecting Palo Alto Christcnsen passed over all the foreign horses on the farm such as Hand Grenade the Prince Palatine stallion AVar Fame Hesperus AVar Cry and Eliminator the latter a brother to the Kentucky Oaks winner Sunnoiinct The English horseman said the Americanbred animal had the best bone and substance and was not too much on the leg as arc some of the others shown him himMr Mr Macomucrs connections have been aware for some time of the potentialities in Palo Alto not only on account of his aristocratic blood lines but by reason of his individuality and the stallion has served quite a number of the Macomber mares Of the twenty mares shipped to France last fall three were supposed to be in foal to the goodlook ¬ ing son of Heywood There are some Palo Altos among the yearling on the Roots place too and curiously enough Mr Christenscn selected them as the most promising for racing racingIn In the breeding season just closed the prefer ¬ ence was given to Hand Grenade a fiveyearold by Suustar All Green by Greenlawn a horse that defeated good ones in fast time on the Xew York tracks AVar Fame by Prince Palatine Verne by Bill of Portland an elephant of a thorough ¬ bred standing seventeen hands or more was also given some opportunities along with Palo Alto Hesperus and the others othersOf Of the few representatives of the male line in this country of Hapover Palo Alto is as likely as any to carry on for the great sire He was a good racer hereabouts as was his sire Heywood Rosormonde his dam by Ormonde Fairy Rose by Kisbcr was a good producer for many years Of course there is no better blood in the world Fairy Rose was one of the mares purchased in England by the late Senator Lcland Stanford when lie failed in his ambition to buy Isonomy Besides Rosormonde the famous mare was the dam of the sensatioiil Itacine Fairy and other highclass thoroughbreds
