ELMENDORFS MYRTLE SELLING STAKES Diminutive Pen Rose Wins Handicap Milkmaid Found Bleeding After Race NEW YORK N Y July 8 The Myrtle Selling Stakes for threeyearolds and over was the stake feature at Aqueduct today but scratches reduced the field to three with Elmendorf finding the most favor The Quincy Stables representative fully justified the opinion held of his chances by going to the front when called on and winning in hollow fashion Salvcstra made a futile effort to overhaul the leader but easily held second money safe from Sundial II IIA A handicap at one mile for mares threeyear olds and over excited more interest than the stake nice as its field embraced among the starters Commander J K L Ross sterling mare Milkmaid and the diminutive Pen Rose the recent races of which stamped her as returning to her twoyear old form and which in a recent race defeated the Ross filly Milkmaid was accorded favoritism but caused groans of dismay to emanate from her backers when just as she was making her chal ¬ lenge and within a half length of Pen Rose she was seen to fall back abruptly Pen Rose which had set a fast pace won easily from Lady Ger ¬ trude which as easily took second place from Toujours the wellbacked second choice Milkmaid when brought to the stand was found to be bleed ¬ ing copiously copiouslyJ J E Wideners Joyful had an easy time in the race through the field defeating the others most decisively Candidate II easily outstayed Ticket which was a distant follower in the early running and finished with a belated rush rushW W Eppers has purchased Hope Princess on pri ¬ vate terms C M Bnxton will continue to train the filly fillyHendrie Hendrie was claimed out of the first race by a Mr Downing for 3000 and Cinderella was taken out of the same race by Henry Lingelbach for 2100 2100It It is probable that Milkmaid is beginning to show the effects of her long campaign and she will no doubt be given a letup
