PAUL WEIDEL WINS CANADIAN DERBY Carries Off Principal Race of Fort Erie Meeting Without a Challenge FORT ERIE Ontario July 8 Paul Weidel the Lowenstein crack colt by Golden Maxim Lady Lexington added the twentyfirst running of the Canadian Derby to his long string of victories this afternoon Leading from start to finish under re ¬ straint the Lowenstein colorbearer won drawing away from exhausted opponents which were tired out behind him just as they were in the Hamilton Derby Paul Weidel won without a challenge Jockey J McTaggart got him away from the out ¬ side position of a field of four and as soon as he had raced into the lead for the first journey down the front stretch took a strong hold on him and never had occasion to call on him Paul Weidel was an overwhelming favorite and his victory was popular not only with those who had backed him but also with that contingent which appreciates a splendid performance Besthoff finished second and Royal Jester third Besthoff raced into second position by passing Royal Jester after running a half mile and never relinquished the place but tired at the end Royal Jester easily held the third portion of the purse safe from Master Bill which was allowed to drop far back in tho early running and could not make up the ground lost lostThe The Derby was contested over a lumpy drying out track so the time of 207 in which Paul Weidel ran the distance did not approach the best time for the race but his performance was impressive in view of the ease with which it was accomplished accomplishedTwo Two changes in the jockeys in the days feature were necessitated by accidents to jockeys J Wil ¬ liams and W Obert in previous races today Obcrt was thrown when Betsy stumbled in the first event His jawbone was fractured and he also received a flesh wound Williams sustained a broken bone In his left foot when he scraped the fence while astride Waac in the third race Botli were taken to a Buffalo hospital hospitalJ J Bntwell filled Williams engagement on Master Bill and R Simpson rode Besthoff in place of Obert ObertPhil Phil Hymes returned today after a hurried trip to New York Jfoek Onin j wag added to the schooling list by starter Milton yesterday yesterdayMountain Mountain Rose II was ordered scratched from the seventh race today because of the failure of his owner to have him schooled schooledJ J D Hay one of the mutuel calculators leaves for Baltimore Saturday night nightW W P Fraser secretary of the Ontario Jockey Club visited the course today todayH H Neusteter disposed of the good plater Spear lone to M J Kramer Spearleiie ran In the interest of his new owner today
