WM K VANDERBILT DEAD Noted American Financier and Sportsman SportsmanPasses Passes Away in France Scene of His HisMost Most Important Turf Successes PARIS France July 22 AVilliam K Vauder bilt American capitalist died here at six oclock this afternoon at tlie age of 71 His daughter Consuelo Duchess of Marlborough and his sons William K Jr and Harold were present His remains will be taken to New York and buried ia the family plot on Staten Island William K Vanderbilt was a son of William II Vanderbilt and a grandson of Commodore Van ¬ derbilt He inherited an immense fortune and for many years was mainly known in railroad circles with the New York Central almost a family pos ¬ session Although always a vital man and inter ¬ ested in various forms of open air diversions he was never a practical turfman in this country racing no horses through the many years when he was president of the foremost racing organization in this country the famous Coney Island Jockey Club In view of this it seems odd that when he took up his abode in France he speedily embarked in breeding and racing there on a scale that present ¬ ly made him the leading turfman and breeder in France His breeding establishment at St Louis de Poissy was an immense affair and was as was his racing stable in charge of the able American trainer William Duke while his equally able head jockey was the St Louis product Frank ONeill On the French turf his success was marveloifo He was the leader of the French winning owners in lilOfi KIOS 1909 1JTO Itll His stable win ¬ nings were in excess of 200000 in four different years his greatest record in this respect coming in 190S when his horses won slightly more than 202000 Such results inevitably suggest possess ¬ ing of highclass race horses He had them and many of them such stars of the French turf a Northeast Mniiiteiion Sea Sick Prestige and Nego fol racing in his colors So recently as last year his good colt Tchad placed tlie French Derby to his credit Whether his sons will maintain his great racing interests in France or sell his many horses is a question of high importance to tlie turf world here and abroad
