ENGLANDS LEADING TWOYEAROLDS Milesius and Alan Breck the Best Syrian Prince and Humorist Well liked The twoyearold miming of the colts has been interesting in so far as it demonstrates the great merit of the Ascot winners Milesius and Alan Breck for Monarch could not extend Milesius in the Coventry Stakes and Hamlet except that he showed good speed was no sort of use against I Alan Breck in the race for the New Stakes Then too we had seen Thunderer which was second to Milesius just a head in front of Monarch go North and win the Seaton Delaval Plate by six lengths Now we find Monarch good enough to win the July Stakes and Hamlet takes the Exotcr Stakes which may be hardly to the credit of those two timehonored races but after all Monarch has only boon beaten once out of four and Hamlet had obviously come on a good deal since his Ascot debut He was lucky perhaps to win from Poiret and Eaglehawk and the fact that the former of those got to his head servos to show that he must be a good deal behind his stable companion Humorist even if the latters Epsom victory be taken at no more than its paper value On the other hand Hamlet is a big backward colt and a May foal He may be expected to improve rapidly and I dont suppose Poire t will trouble him next time tltey meet though it is possible that Eaglu huwk may do so PROMISING YOUNGSTERS YOUNGSTERSSyrian Syrian Prince which ran second to Monarch badly needs building up He has certainly not thriven on his work and for the time being needs to be let up as the Americans phrase it for quite a long period so far as it is possible for an outside critic to judge I feel sure that there are immense possibilities for this colt as he has done so well when he has nothing but his beautiful easy action to favor him at a time when he is short of muscle and substance and necessarily weak I believe I am correct in assuming that Humorist is at present the best of Mortons twoyearolds and that ho is a really good one whom even his trainer would admit to be such but there are others iii the background both with Morton anil Charles Peck and I expect we shall see Mr J B Joel in quite his old winning form before the year is over One thing I know and it is that I never saw him or any one else with so many good yearlings as there were at Childwickbury last i season Of these I have only seen the twoyear olds that have run and Humorist Thunderer Hamlet and Star Grass are jood winners There seems to be no doubt about Mr Joels intention to keep Suustar in future exclusively for his own mares though such a policy has never in my long experience proved to be a successful one so far as the reputation of the stallion Is concerned Still I doubt not arrangements will be made in some case for exchanging nominations as between Sunstar and other notable sires or for taking specially suitable mares such as the dams of Buchan or Galloper Light It would be folly indeed not to do this Sunstar is so remarkably virile that it is misleading to judije him by ordi ¬ nary standards and claim that too many marcs have hitherto been taken to Mm I believe that if stud grooms service books could be inspected it would be found that many a hcrse with a sub ¬ scription list not half so numerous as Sunstars has iKen a good deal more heavily taxed to get through his season The Special Commissioner in London Sportsman
