L AT ONI A CHAMPIONSHIP STAKES SIXTYTHREE THREE YEAR OLDS REMAIN ELIGIBLE T TTHE THE RICHEST RACE OF THE YEAR H P PWHITNEYS WHITNEYS STRONG HAND Sixtythree threeyearolds remain eligible to the Latonia Championship Stakes of 1920 Entries to the stakes the richest of all American races which will be worth about 40000 this year closed on March 15 1018 The event drew 342 entries the fee for eacli being 15 On January 1 1919 a pay ¬ ment of 25 had to be made to keep those entered eligible and this served to eliminate quite a number which in private trials and general appearances had satisfied their owners that they were not of the necessary caliber to be kept in such an important event eventPayments Payments were made on 145 on the date nientloncd and they had their first racing year to show their true mettle and give their owners a further chance to judge as to their worthiness to 1m kept eligi ¬ ble for the rich stake The next payment which fell due on January 1 1920 when the Championship candidates became three years old called for 50 and again there was a curtailment of eligibies leav ¬ ing only the best or those which had shown promise of developing into good horses in time to contest for the big affair No more fees will be exacted from the owners of those left until the day of the race when it will cost 500 more for each starter This figure is certain to draw only the topnotchers to the post and such a ricli event is worthy of being contested for only by threeyearolds of the highest cal ¬ iber iberThis This far in advance the big stake naturally has an air of uncertainty to it as many things can hap ¬ pen in two and onehalf months and there is a probability of more good threeyearolds showing up at Saratoga but regardless of what happens the East will have the strongest hand to play in it The best representation from that section will be the Harry Payne Whitney stable which seems to have a happy faculty of carrying off the rich prizes offered by the Kentucky Jockey Club ClubWith With three such sterling performers still eligible as John P Grier Wildair and Upset the Whitney establishment is unusually well fortified for the most valuable threeyearold stake in America Wildair and Upset have already conquered the best of their age that the West could pit against them the former the Ten Broeck Handicap at Latonia and the latter in the Latonia Derby while John P Griers prowess was demonstrated in his recent race with the great Man o War Should one of the Whitney horses prove successful in this race the stable earnings of this owner in Kentucky alone for this year would run over the 100000 mark as he lips already annexed onehalf that sum at the recent Churchill Downs and Latonia meetings While the champion Man o War is not among the eligibies such other good threeyearolds in addi ¬ tion to the abovementioned Whitney stars as Commander Koss Constancy Royal Jester and King Thrush W R Coes Cleopatra G W Lofts On Watch and W F Poisons Peace Pennant are among the remaining eligibies and the prospects are that a much larger and higherclass field will contest for this rich prize than that of last year when Mad Hatter won the first running of the Championship Stakes The following are the eligibies to the Latonia Championship Stakes StakesJos Jos Allgeyers Lord Wrack b c by Wrack Gowell GowellRichard Richard Allmans Grand
