TEXAS SIRE MEELICK DIES UNTIMELY Through John A Payne of Cincinnati conies in ¬ formation of the recent death of the stallion Meelick at G L Blackfords farm near Denison Texas Meelick was bred by John E Madden and was a son of the English sire Planudes dam Ilythia by Tammany He was foaled in 1905 and was a capital race horse His sire Planudes was not much of a race horse in England but was highly bred being by St Simon Lonely by Her ¬ mit Lonely was the winner of the Epsom Oaks of 18S5 Ilanudcs sired some useful racers but Meelick was probably the best of his progeny He was gifted with superior speed and won the Sap ¬ phire Stakes Great Eastern Handicap and a purse at Sheepshead Bay when a twoyearold Sam Hildreth then bought him and took him to Cali ¬ fornia There he won the California Derby at Oakland from Stanley Fay Early Tide and five more The Los Angeles Derby at Ascot Park from Early Tide Magazine and others also several purse races Then be was brought east to New Orleans and won the Crescent City Derby in which be ran its mile and an eighth in l51jf with 122 pounds up and defeated such stars of the time as Chapnlte pic Angelus and Pinkola Many other good races lie ran As a sire his opportunities considered he was quite successful This year his son Centimeter owned no superior iu Kentucky twoyearold racing Had he stood near Lexington with access to the blueblood matrons there lie would probably have won high fame as a sire Being still young in stud life his loss is a great one to Texas blood stoc breeding
