RACING IN SANDWICH ISLANDS Regular Circuit With Meetings at Honolulu HonoluluHilo Hilo and Kahului Mary Jay Wins WinsTwo Two Races in One Day SAN FRANCISCO Cal July 28 The old days of racing when it was nothing for n sturdy per ¬ former to come out two or three times in one afternoon to try conclusions with other thorough ¬ breds are recalled by the sport given in populous centers in the Hawaiian Islands In the most recent race meeting put on by the islanders held at Kahului Island of Maui the bay mare Mary Jay by Hippodrome Calyx won the first race oil the card and then after resting a couple of hours was victorious in tin twelfth race Mary Jay was raced in tkis country as a twoyearold and three yearold She was once owned by John ORonrke veteran Pacific coast racing man and later passed into the possession of Angus MePhee MePheeORourkes ORourkes brown mare Clara Martin which he purchased at Tijuana last winter was mong those defeated by the fleetfooted Mary Jny in the first race Clara Martin is by Sain Missy by Midlothian and after her racing days are over will be retired to the stud ORourke has taken over a number of shipments of horses to the islands in the last fourteen years yearsThere There is a regular circuit in the islands with meetings at Honolulu Hilo and Kahului Nearly all of the prominent families of Hawaii are rep ¬ resented in the races by horses imported from the mainland or bred in their own stud establishments A concrete grandstand is to be constructed by the association controlling the Honolulu course the improvement being made possible through the pros ¬ perity of the sport sportThe The attendance at the Kahului meeting was con ¬ servatively estimated at 7000 planters plantation employes cowboys and residents from miles around coming to the races There were fifteen races some of them for thoroughbreds and others for ponies Mary Jays first victory was in a three quarters dasli which she woiiIla axlriving fiuii U from Dreamery and Clara 2htariiii in 118 The other race she won was at a mile J W Shin ¬ gles Castenev which had the bad luck to be left at the post in the first race was away to ad ¬ vantage in the mile dash One of the island critics in writing of the race said saidIf If Casteney had been given his way early in the race instead of being saved for the finish the fans incline to the belief that he would have won Special races were included in the program fcr horses ridden by cowboys by women by Japanese and by Portuguese
