CAPTAIN MAG FIRST HOME Defeats Sterling by Inches in a Nobly Contested Race. -- . Favorites Again Find Rough Treatment Blushing Beauty and Lucky B. Winners. BY J. L. DEMPSEY. IjATONIA, Ky., October 5. O. W. Clarks Captain Mac and C. C. Van Meters Sterling staged u spectacular duel in the sixth race at a mile and an eighth for a purse of ,300, featuring todays curd. Captain Mac triumphed, but only by the slightest of margin, and that only in the last stride. Sterling disputing every inch of ground with him through the last quarter, and only succumbed right at the end. Sterling, in the earlier running, was the leader and had made a fast pace, but Captain Mnc gradually gained on him and just before rounding into the stretch it appeared as If be would come away to an easy victory, but Sterling was not to be disposed of without a struggle and the many backers of Captain Mac became anxious when the Clark representative failed to shake him off. Both jockeys were striving to their utmost and the finish found the horses so close together tliat no one could pronounce the result until the official placing was displayed. Travesty had little difficulty in outstaying Grand Slum, the only other starter, for third place. Todays attendance was again up to the average, but the difficult card caused a slight slump in the .8iulatiofl.v,-Cap.taInMae. n;as-4heonlj:, pronounced: cholcertowIn. . E. It, Bradleys successes continue and his Blushing Beauty was one to contribute a purse to his score when she finished in advance of the other good fillies and mares starting at three-quarters. She won easily enough, after giving her supporters some concern by her bad post behavior, but the start found her off well and, following the early pacemaker closely, ultimately drew out in the last sixteenth to win easily from Blue Paradise, with Furbelow in third place. The latter, however, was disqualified for having swerved sharply near the end and impeding Looking Up and others. Marjorie Hynes was the one best sunpported in the race, but Onrner gave her a misjudged ride and took her back In the early running. When he did rouse himself in the stretch he found himself badly pocketed, with the result that Marjorie Hynes did not have much opportunity to extend herself. The backers of favorites again encountered many obstacles and the defeat of the first five choices left them disconsolate and with well depleted purses. They began by installing Rifle favorite ill tie opener, but he finished among the also rans. Port Light winning here with consummate ease from Missed the Time. Linden was installed the Choice in the second, but lie was taken into camp by Lucky B., which beat him by a scant head in a spirited drive. Cigale was backed to the exclusion of the others in the third race, but Saharazadc just lasted long enough to get home in advance of lier. Marjorie Hynes was the next favorite beaten, and Tawnsentha contributed to the general downfall when she failed to overcome the interference she suffered from in the early running to get up ill time to head Machiavelli. J. McPherson, represented in the second race by Alliena, claimed Linden for ,500. Milo Shields Bradleys Choice made it a double for that owner during the afternoon, incidentally making it the second favorite to succeed during the day. J. T. Strite claimed Bourbon Green for ,100 frohi the last race.
