ANOTHER PARR SURPRISE His Colt Blazes Defeats John P. Grier in Maryland Handicap. - Failure of Whitney Entry Biggest Shock of Fall Season Careful Again Victorious. LAUREL, Md., Octobe 16. Last spring Capt. Ral Parr furnished a big surprise when he won the Kentucky Derby with Paul Jones. Today the popular Virginian not only surprised but fairly astounded an immense Saturday gathering at the Maryland State Fair course when his Wrack colt Biases triumphed over the crack Whitney pair, John P. Grier and Damask, in the 0,000 added Maryland Handicap, one of the outstanding features of the fall meeting at Laurel. The defeat of John P. Grier was the biggest shock of the fall season. On the "strength of the brilliant performances of the son of Whisk Broom II. Wonder and the recent good form of Damask the public poured its money in on the Whitney entry, with the result that the pair went to the post nh. overwhelming favorite, being quoted at 1 to 10. Five faced the starter and the Whitney backers felt no uneasiness when Butwell sent Blazes away in the lead. As they passed the judges stand the first time Blazes was a length and aTialf in front of John P. Grier, with Herd Girl following closest-John P.y Grier took the rail position from the Ross color-bearer, going to the first turn and closely pursued the pacemaker through thobackstretclt while thir Wrack; coll sped along under light restraint. N earing the half-mile post John P. Grier began to weaken under-hls impost of 127 pounds and Damask, slipping through on the inside rail, took jip the task after his stablemate had tired. Rounding into the stretch. Blazes had an advantage of a length and a half over Damask, a length of which he main- tained to the end under the- energetic and skillful riding of Butwell. Damask closed fast, but never seriously threatened the winner. The race was worth ,500 to the winner. The Eutaw, a three-quarter mile claiming handicap, for three-year-olds and over, which served as one of the supplementary attractions, fell to Sam Louis War Marvel, which packed top weight of 115 pounds and won by half a length from Sam Ross Pride of India. Helen Atkin was a bang-up third. Walter J. Salmons popular filly Careful won the third race, for two-year-old fillies at three-quarters mile. The Wrack Mindful filly hooked up today with E. F. Whitneys By JIminy, which ran her to a head earlier in the meeting. Although the Jim Gaffney filly was the beneficiary in a six-pound switch in the weights over those which prevailed on the occasion of their other clash, todays race was no contest. Careful won easy by n length, with By Jiminy second and Muttiklns, from the J. K. L. Ross stable, third. Careful carried 123 pounds and By Jiminy 107. Under a perfect ride by Frank Keogh, Careful showed versatility in making all the pace, whereas in her two succeeding starts she had come from behind to win. Kirah, ridden by Jarvis, was an easy winner of a three-quarters-mile dash for platers, which opened the program. Lloyd George finished second, Ina Kay third. STEEPLECHASER. RTJPICA DESTROYED. . R. H. Crawford again rode the winner of the steeplechase, piloting Ticket to victory over Martian and Westminster. Rupica, the only other starter, fell at the twelfth fence and was so badly injured that he was destroyed. The suspension of Jockey Haynes for five days has been extended for the remainder of the meeting; in view of further evidence of the case. Jockey Earl Sande announces that no overtures have been made by H. P. Whitney seeking to obtain his contract. Another report is in circulation now that Gehe -Wayland has offered Sande 2,000 and fees to ride for W. J. Salmon next year. Flibbertygibbet, belonging to C. I. Wilson, got in from Canada this morning. Wash Norvell arrived from Windsor today. He will spend the remainder of the meeting here arid then go to Pinflico, where he serves in an official capacity. J. Grune, the apprentice picked up by J. K. L. Ross in Canada last summer, has joined the establishment here. Jockeys H. Myers and W. Hinphy are the latest additions to the riding colony, both coming from Windsor. J. Mclllmurray, whose horses raced in Canada last summer, is an arrival. Richard Scully shipped here from Hagerstown this morning. J. E. Davis today shipped Sidera, Whalebone and two yearlings to Benning to be turned out. Sidera is broken down. Whalebone has been fired. J. Kennedy sold .the filly Pleasing Picture to Milton Cann for ,500. She is a three-year-old b Ildrim Pictures, by Watercress, and will be used for breeding purposes. Jockey Stearns stopped off at his home on the way here from Windsor.
