CIRRUS AND MAD HATTER Again Win for S. C. Hildreth Jockey Ensor Rides Four Winners Mooney Tvyo. NEW YORK, N. Y., October 10. The opening day of the final period of racing on the Metropolitan tracks this year began at Empire City today and proved disastrous to the oralizcrs, as five favorites and one strongly-backed second choice were successful. S. C. Hildreths horses played an important part in the days happcrijngs, as Mad Hatter and Cirrus repeated their good performances of the last Saturday at Jamaica.- Mad Hatter, with jockey Ensbr up, started in the second race, but had little opposition. The Fair Play colt, at odds of 1 to H, ran as if he should have been 1 to 50. Getting dff fully in motion, he simply toyed with his opponents, winning as his rider pleased. La Ilablee, which had followed Recount, came fast In the stretch" arid took second money easily. Lady Gertrude was third.-Recount was made too -.much usai of in the earlier running" and had little left when the real racing began. Cirrus, coupled with Krewcr, flying the Hildreth colors, was an easy winner of the Scarsdale Handicap, the ,000 added feature of tlietdays program, although he receded in the quotations from 7 to 10 to 4 to 5 at post time. Sennings Park was the second choice and received almost as much support as the Hildreth pair. The Waterbury colt was on his bad behavior at the post and when the barrier" was sprung he was off last. Cirrus, on the other hand, was off like a flash and, carrying his 130 pounds without any apparent trouble, won at the end by two lengths easily. Sennings Park- was the runner-up throughout, but found his weight too much and, although hard ridden, he. could never get into challenging distance of Cirrus. He was two and- a half lengths in front of Krewer at the finish. Jockeys Ensor and Mooney swept tlie card, Ensor taking- four arid Mooney two. Followers of these two jockeys were elated over the results. Jockey A. Schuttinger came to Empire City yesterday from Laurel. He will join his contract employer, J. W. McClelland, and they will go to Saratoga, where tlie numerous" yearlirigs there be longing to Mr. McClelland will be given their first lessons in racing. Many stables have arrived at Empire City which raced on the Canadian circuits. Those noticed yesterday already oil the ground were the stables of N. K. Wood, J. Allen, J". Cunningham and Aj Tempest. Jockeys J. Mclntyre and L. Tryon are also arrivals at Empire City, where: they will accept mounts.
