I ARMY HORSE WINS TEST RACE Mile. Denise First in 300-Mile Contest Arab Horse Rustem Bay Second and Bunkie Third. While the 300-mile endurance race, which began last Monday at Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont, terminated at Camp Devons, Mass., Friday night, the result was not announced until Saturday. Mile. Denise, grade thoroughbred mare, owned by the army remount service and ridden by Major Stanley Koch of the general staff, was declared the winner. Rustem Bey, full-blooded Arab, was awarded second place, and Bunkie, stablemate of Mile. Denise and of the same breed, was third-. The awards followed close observation by the judges of the condition of the horses. The finding took into account speed, condition and economy of feed consumption in proportions, respectively, of 40, 50. and 10 per cent. Mile. Denise and Bunkie had led all other horses in their net time over -the long course. They set the pace for three days and followed fast behind the Arabs Crabbet and Rustem Bey in the record-breaking pace of the last two days. In the weight and gait tests Saturday, which supplemented observations of the race, Rustem Bey was found to be in perfect condition, bringing the Arab to a high place in the standing, but the army mounts of cross-breds stood up so well that first and third honors were theirs. Only ten of the twenty-seven horses which started the test finished it and were included in the awards. Of the six horses which figured in the prizes and ribbons, two were grade thoroughbreds, two were full-blooded Arabs, one was a grade I Arab and the sixth a Morgan. Moscowa, lthe only one of the Kentucky thoroughbreds to survive, was eighth in the standing.
