Ky.. November 2 The Churchill Downs fall meeting opened today with a big attendance, but under unfavorable weather and track conditions. The star r.ice of the day was the Falls City Handcap, with ,000 added. There, was considerable scratching from this, but that did not prevent a capital race and a highly exciting finish in which Woodtrap prevailed over Sands of Pleasure by a narrow margin, largely because King rode Sands of Pleasure with bad judgment in having him in the worst going most all the -way. Sterling finished a distant third. In the secondary feature Jack Hare Jr. won from Col. Taylor and The Boy with a, measure of ease, showing that his recent defeat by The Boy at Latonia was all wrong. C. H. Lansdale and J. H. Moody, who are making arrangements . for the Havana special liorse train, are planning to have the special leave the South Louisville yards the day following the close of the Downs meeting. From the number of applications, received for space, it is believed over twenty Arm cars will be necessary to transport the horses. Ward bought privately this morning the colt Mcrrimae from S. K. Nichols. .Dave Leary, assistant to Sam C. Hildreth, arrived last night from New York in advance of the two-year-old Grey Lag, which is an intended starter in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. The colt was to have reached here last night, but late this afternoon, was still en route and may not reach here until late during the night. "Sandy" McNaughton, intending to start Ten-Lcc in the- Jockey Club " Stakes, wired here thi9 morning for information when it is to be run. , James Fitzsimmons may send Plnyfellow, brother to Man o War, to start in the same race. Martin Nathanson, secretary of the Havana track; departed for Cuba this morning, to begin preliminary duties attending the opening of the winter meeting in the Cuban capital. Trainer James Rowe of the Harry Payne Whitney horses wired here today for reservation for four horses that, he intends to ship immediately. It is presumed that the band will include an intended starter in the Jockey Club Stakes. The silks of Bud Fisher, noted cartoonist, was seen on a Kentucky track for" the first time wlieh Hold Up started in the second race. A. B. Lettellier, one of the principal directors in the New Orleans Business Mens Association, was among the visitors. Capt. B. C. Bunbtiry was an arrival today.
