J. E. WIDENERS DUETT1STE Wins for Second Time Valuable Manly Memorial Steeplechase. - Crack Jumper Carries 173 Pounds to Great Victory Leochares in Easy Triumph. i BALTIMORE, Md., November 2. J. E. Wideners brilliant jumper, Duettiste, won for the second year in succession the Manly Memorial Steeplechase, the most valuable jumping race run in this country, and thereby gained for his. owner the permanent possession of the sold cup that goes to the winner. According to the conditions of the race the trophy must be won twice by the same owner before it becomes his permanent possession. Duettistes success today was one of the most remarkable ever scored by a steeplechaser in this country. The eight-year-old Bthelbert .gelding carried the crusher of 173 pounds and won a smashing victory over a large band of the best timber-toppers in trailing. Duettiste, fencing cleanly, was waited ! with until in the last half mile,- then moved up fast, passed his opponents like a flash and drew away into n big lead, winning eased up. Highland Light was. second and Minata third. Warlock ran far- below expectations. Of the thirteen starters seven .finished, the others coming to grief at one stage or another. Members and friends of the various Hunt Club and devotees of racing through the field were -out in large numbers to witness the decision of the Manly Memorial. The crowd was one of the largest ever, seen at Pimlico. Jockey Weiner, hiding Wyoming for It. T. Wilson, figured in the days big upset. The Bryn Mawr horse defeated Panoply and Crank in a rousing finish which marked the running of the Stafford Handicap at three-quarters mile. The winner paid 03.90 on a ticket. F. Weir has taken over the book of jockey Carroll. This lad can make ninety-five pounds and is riding in good form. Jockey Fairbrother, who recently signed a contract to ride for the Greentree Stable, is an arrival. Jockeyt J. Wessler will leave for France at the conclusion of- racing in this section and will ride for T. P. Thorne. E.. Kummer, brother of Clarence Kummer, will do much of the riding for the Foreign stable next year. He is under contract to Sandy McNaughton, who developed Clarence. William Martin, who served as patrol judge in Canada this summer, has taken over the horses belonging to Burt Williams and will race them in New Orleans during the winter. It is reported that W. K. Coc will winter a portion of -his horses in Tennessee. Roy Dickerson, Mars Cassidys chief assistant, who served as starter at Jamaica during the illness of his employer, is an arrival. C. K. Moore sent fourteen and E. D. Springer ten on the special to the Cuban course. Among the horses which left Empire City Sunday for Havana were ten head in charge of Kenneth Karrick. He will- leave for the Cuban course with the ten at the conclusion of the Maryland season. J. Denlers string went along and there were two in the shipment belonging to It. T. Wilson.
