j : GREENTREE STABLES BIG YEAR MRS. PAYNE WHITNEYS COMBINATION Of JUMPERS AND FLAT RACERS MAKE SPLENDID SHOWING FOR AMERICA S FOREMOST LADY OWNER Last year Mrs. Payne Whitneys combination of junipers and flat racers, racing in the name of the Greentree Stable, won a total of 3,071. This year they won the much larger sum of 4,115, constituting a record for the stable in money won. Of this: the greatest single component is to the credit of th steeplechaser Flare, but he had little the best of the speedy two-year-old Touch Me Not, which won the valuable Great American Stakes at Aqueduct in the style of a promising youngster.. The reliable junipers, Syosset and Square Dealer, each contributed in excess of ,000, and the speedy sprinter, Peter Piper, was not far away from winning that sum. Debadou, known to be a capable jumper by actual demonstration in steeplechases, furnished a contradiction in scoring his only successes of the year in flat racing, in one case running a mile at Belmont Park in such fast time as 1:37 and easily defeating Fair Gain, Star Master and two other good racers. A good many burnt their fingers afterward over the reasonable theory that such speed, combined with the ability to jump well, should bring frequent success in cross country. It did not work out that way and it may be that Dcbadous true vocation is in flat racing, as befits a brother of Leoehares. The two-year-old fillies Cullinan, Good Bye and Costly Colours won races for the stable, but the high-priced Irish Sea proved a dismal failure, -not even being once placed in his ten races. As the Celt Sand Dune colt he cost the stable 2,500 at the Saratoga sale of the Hancock yearlings. In all, the satisfactory stable return for the year was: Horse. Col. and Sex. A.
