SUMMERY WEATHER ARRIVES f . ! Jefferson Park Track Improved and Fast Horses Start. 1 Better Condition Tells and. Rapid Day Defeats Sterling in the Feature Race. y fRY J. L. DEMPSEY. NEW ORLEANS, La., December 10. Rood sprinters furnished the contest in the three-quarters handicap of ,000. designed to give racers of all ages an opportunity io display their prowess, and it brought a victory to Ilapid Day over Sterling and VIce-Cliairmun, St. Quentin, the favorite, finishing far back and runninc n poor race, foreshadowed by his action on his way to the post. It was Sterlings initial race on a winter track and considerable interest attached to his performance, but lack of backing for him caused the odds to soar, the sharps inclining toward Rapid Day, and the result justified their judgment, for Rapid Day kept -in close pursuit of Vice-Chairman, and Sterling raced into a decisive lead in the stretch with ease. Sterling raced forwardly from the start and easily held those behind him safe for second place. The race should put hint on edge. Vice-Chairman had to be ridden hard for third place. St. Quentin ran with a proppy stride from the start and was never dangerous. There was a sudden change in atmospheric conditions .and summery weather was the order during the afternoon, resulting in an immense throng being on hand to witness the racing. The track lind-improVert condgrgMyoTerSigritrTiur JBtill" showed traces of dullness, although furnishing firm looting. -Upsets developed" frequently and backers of favorites experienced difficulty, their first success coming with the victory of Peggy C, in the Knebolkninp colors. Her win, like others during the afternoon, was achieved only after a hard and gamely-sustained drive. Two of the beaten favorites, Nominee and White Socks, came from the S. A. Clopton stable and were ridden by Coltiletti. The former landed in second place and the last named followed the others home. Nebraska and Dr. Campbell were the favored ones in the second race, but Vansylvia was the winner here, Nebraska landing in second place and Keen Jane third. The inexperienced Anthony, who has had but few mounts, showed the skill of a veteran astride Ionia, "WhlcU beat Salute in the third race, with Old Mc-Kenna in third place. Another thrilling finish came in the fourth race . when Yaphank and Anna Gallup came to the end heads .apart after having engaged in a hard drive all through the stretch. Big Idea landed third and the favorite. Lovers Lane II., was far back in tfie rear. Todays arrivals included James OHara, one of the principal stockholders in the Bowie track and also extensively identified with the" Jefferson Park track. He will remain until the close of the local racng season. R. A. Smith brought his highly regarded bay colt, by Wrack Bacchante, on his arrival at the Fair Grounds. Smith brought eight horses here to campaign, having turned Slippery Elm, Irish Kiss, Ragnarok and May Ward out at his recently-bought farm near Newark, Deleware. "The final dash this afternoonat a mile and a quarter was the first at this distance ever run at the course. The veteran Etruscan, owned by E. G. Vivell, died this morning from acute indigestion. Fred Wright, the architect who planned the Bowie and Jefferson tracks and buildings, was among the newcomers for an extended visit. Todays newcomers included Thomas Shaw, bnt lie will rest several days before joining the price quoters.
