BETTER JEFFERSON TRACK . Labor and a Helpful High Wind Improve the Going, ; Tan Son Eims a Good Mile in Winning Feature Race Illinois Lad Unexpected Victor-- HY J. L. DKMPSKY. NKW OKLKANS. La., December 2:5. Todays program was decidedly of an off-day character and brought into clashing some of the poorer grade in these parts. The track had improved considerably under the constant labor of the track forces and a stiff breeze aided in the drying process. The mile purse for two-year-olds did service as the feature and it resulted disastrously for form backers, who held Charles A. Hyrne, ridden by Lyke. to be the best, but the horse ran a pool-race anil finishing far back. Tan Son, a winner in his previous race, winning from Sea Court and Walk Vp. Hackers of favorites began auspiciously with the success of Ace in the initial dash, but luckily a poor band opposed him, for he had his troubles retting in home in advance and only succeeded in shaking Philanderer off in the last seventy yards. The smart set centered their attention on Shoot On in the second race and this colt gave his backers little concern, for he dashed into the lead at once and led throughout. Anticipate and Murray, both given indifferent, rides, landing second and third respectively. Vansylvia was another well meant one that got home in front after having been tiie recipient of consistent support. She was away poorly, but showing fine peed raced into contention with a rush and drew away in the stretch to win easily from Justice Goebel and General. Illinois Lad, which in previous races was ridden by Uoberts and finished far back, showed suddenly improved form when he accounted in the fourth race in somewhat easy style, Martin keeping him in a forward position from the start and coming away in the last eighth to win by a good margin from Harvey Smarr. Illinois Lad was not overlooked in a betting way and some of the layers lost extensively by his victory. Lady Ward was the favorite in the race, but her chance was spoiled when she was away pooily and exhausted herself in trying to get to the leaders. Young Adam had to be much the best in the sixth race to win. for lie suffered extensively on the first turn and soon after the start from interference, but came around the others in steady style and . raced into the lead in the last sixteenth to win with speed in reserve. Wild Flower, the early leader, tired, but just lasted long enough to take second place from the fast coming I.oiid. The best finish of the afternoon came in the dosing race- when Sandy Mac and Corydon fought I it out in strenuous stylo and Sandy Mac just lasted to win by a nose, Corydon tiring just enough to give Sandy Mae the decision. Judge Fred A. Midilleton. attorney for Thomas K. McISride. the oralizer charged with violation of 1 the Ijcke law. asked for a bill of particulars when tic case came up for hearing this morning. Tlie i presiding judge granted the request and made it returnable for next Tuesday. It seems unlikely at the present that the trial will be held before some iime in the latter part of January. I Voung Adam was claimed for SI, 700 by V. Galio, I represented by Galway in the sixth race.
