ENGLANDS FOURYEAROLDS Silvern Braishfield and Wanton Held to Be Prospective Stars of That Age This Year It is to the Ascot Hold Cup that we look for the best of the seasons stayers I do not think there is any reason to bewail the lack of talent judging from the entry for this years race raceThe The general impression was that last years threeyearolds were below the average but some of them could boast of good credentials There are some interesting points still to be cleared up for more than one owner thinks he owns the picK of the bunch bunchIt It is i erhap to he regretted that Archaic has pone abroad but the owner was probably wise in accepting the generous offer of Mr Sanford It struck me there were signs that this grand looking horse did not quite sustain his former zest for Ihe business after the Derby However there will now be no opportunity of judging that one way or the other otherAs As a good second in the St Tcger and rather an unlucky one at that Silvern stands out as just about the best of the fouryearolds over a long distance of ground Last year the son of Polymelus and Silver Fowl revealed himself a sound stayer but just a little lacking in that speed which would have made him an outstanding figure among those of his own age 1 quite believe his best performance to have been accomplished in the Eclipse Stakes He was then running over a distance which was not far enough to bring out the best that was in him Yet it was a fine hearty fight he put np against an older horse than himself and one held in high esteem in the stable stableThat That horse of course was Puehan and it can be said on behalf of Silvern that he did not have the luck of the race He was slower than most of the others to find his stride and with Hraish field setting about his task of making the pace n the most praiseworthy manner Silvern was left with what seemed a hopeless task by the time the straight was reached Once he struck the rising ground he buckled to with rare gusto and he went past Tetratema and Allenby without much ado Hut though he put up a grand effort he could not get on terms with Kuchan which was all out to score scoreOn On some previous occasions a doubt had crept into my mind that Silvern was really a battler of the hallmarked type That Eclipse Stake effort eradicated it completely Had the jockey kept a true course all the way along the straight Silvern would have had his name enrolled among the St Leger winners 1 fancy he will take his own part against the best in training over a distance of ground and I hope his career will not be inter ¬ rupted by any unfoieseen circumstance circumstanceOn On point of looks ho will compare with anything in training and some day he should make a fine stallion stallionI I have mentioned Hraishfield and I know his future is looked forward to with confidence rather than hopefulness This colt has had a curious career AVhen running in the name of his breeder Lady James Douglas he was not quite keen on racing Had he been he would not have been sold for such a small figure as was the case caseIt It was solely with a view to making the pace for Huchan that Sth Division as he was then called was purchased by Gerald Deane who acts as master of the horse for Lord Astor The colt was imme ¬ diately renamed and for some reason he at once turned over a new leaf leafI I believe Mr Somervillo Tattersall now has a half share in Hraislifield Mr Deane being a partner in the auctioneering firm of which the former gen ¬ tleman Is the head headI I like the Rayardos when they begin to improve and toward the end of last year Hraishfield was sJeadily progressing when the dreaded heel bug put a premature end to his labors for the year yearIt It has yet to be proved to my satisfaction that the Manton colt is an outandout stayer He was fairly and squarely outstayed by Silvern and Man ton in the St Legor after having held a better place than both a half mile from home Perhaps we have yet to see the best of Hayardos son and the opinion held in the stable is that he ought to make up into u grand fouryearold fouryearoldMANTONS MANTONS STAMINA STAMINAManton Manton has not the same scope as either Silvern or Hraishfield He is well endowed with stamina however and I imagine he will be in his element in a race such as the Ascot Gold Cup He came through to gain third place in the St Leger quite on his merits and he was going so well at the finish that another quarter of a mile would not have troubled him himHe He takes a long time to get to going but though he was the outsider of tho three Manton horses in the Doncaster classic more faith was reposed in his ability to go the distance It was doubted that he had the requisite speed to make him a factor to be reckoned with hut the stable was right in its calculations as far as his stamina was concerned concernedHraishfield Hraishfield Silvern and Manton are all sound horses which should be a credit to the fouryear olds in the coming racing season and with Huchan out of the way they are left with Tangier as the best of the older division Kettledrum in London Sporting Cliroiiicle
