HANDICAP OF THREE YEAR OLDS ESTIMATE OF THE ABILITY OF THE TWENTYNINE BEST BESTOF OF 1921 BASED ON THEIR AVERAGE RACING RACINGPERFORMANCES PERFORMANCES LAST YEAR Among the twoyearolds of last year the threeyearolds of now Tryster is justly held to have excelled his competitors for the honors of his class and year lie was gifted with great speed he car ¬ ried high weight he traversed any distance he was asked to go with indomitable gameness he had the will to win and lie did it every time lie started Obviously the colt which ran the best mile ever put i the credit of a twoyearold is entitled to the highest consideration in the delicate task of essaying a handicap of the thirty iKst twoyearolds of 11120 11120Incheape Incheape was an unbeaten colt He only ran twice Hut he made such an impression on shrewd hardheaded turfmen that he wrtssold for the1 greatest price on record for a twoyearold His individual performance when he won the Fremont Stakes at Aqueduct was one of extraordinary excellence and jus ¬ tifies his being given the highest rank alongside of Tryster TrysterPrudery Prudery was a remarkable lilly Leonardo II is generally regarded as one of the star twoyearolds of last year His Principal performance was in winning the rich Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga lint if there is any solid deduction to lie made based on the running of that race it is that Prudery was en ¬ tirely capable of giving him twelve pound and a heating lie carried 11T pounds and taking the lead at once was untrammeled all the way She had 127 pounds was off next to last in a big Held and had to race on the outside while making her waylip yot was only beaten by a short bead beadPruderys Pruderys defeat in the Futurity can fairly be attributed to the severity of her trial in the Hopeful Sometimes it takes a twoyonrpld a long time to recover from such a race If she has fully recovered and made normal improvement there will be stranger things than to see her follow the example of Kegret when Kentucky Derby day arrives It might be pointed out that she gave the Futurity winner Step Lightly fifteen pounds and an easy beating in both the Hopeful Stakes and the Spinaway Stakes easily beating Careful in both also alsoAs As a winner of the Hopeful and of all of his four races Leonardo II ranked high among the win ¬ ning twoyearolds of last year Quick as a cat on his feet his main characteristic wiisthc celerity with which he got into action enabling him to win his races from start to linish when his rider so sot t elected He wasJiotstattPilln any lifrfJlwuiautumii races hiseasycamUilgn lHlIiigsitggesfrve of some someconstitutional constitutional tenderness tendernessGrey Grey Ijig is undoubtedly a llne aiid fast colt He was especially good in the fall and his second to Tryster in the Kentucky Jockey jtlf Stakes beaten a length at a mile in 13S5 with 122 pounds on his back was an especially highclass performance The Star Shoots can generally be relied upon to im ¬ prove in the transition between tlieir twoyearold days and their threeyearold form So trey Lag may be destined to great things in this years racing By common consent among those who know about horses he was placed in the front rank of the good ones of the year yearStar Star Voter was the best twoyeiirold Itallot sent to the races last year and a downright gooil one lis second to Step Lightly in the Futtirity when carrying 127 pounds was alone a performance of high class Add to this his easy victory in the Cincinnati Trophy and bis noble nice in the Breeders Futurity at Lexington last fall and there stands out a colt to be considered in any company companyXancy Xancy Lee and Careful were two grand lillies Careful gave Xancy Lee lifteeu pounds and a good beating in the Clover Stakes at Aqueduct then gave her live pounds and a head beating in the Sehuyier ville Stakes at Saratoga Hut Xancy Lee was improving and following this won the Tinted States Hotel Stakes from a band of good colts in fast time and in the Spinaway Stakes evened up with Careful when with 127 pounds ou each she linlslied third while Careful ran unplaced Hoth at their best a choice would be ditlicult Careful was one of the big money winners of the year She was given a rather strenuous campaign but stood it well and won her last three races in great style styleHelmve Helmve Yourself was the best of the western colts fast and a stayer He ran a grand race in lin ishing third to Tryster and Grey Lag in tiie Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and previously had given con ¬ vincing proof of his speed and stamina when he won the S10000 added Queen City Handicap at Latonia and ran its mile in l8Si l8SiThe The Texasbred Centimeter showed himself to be a colt of great speed in Kentucky and Canadian racing and as the winner of the Idle Hour and Harold Stakes commands a healthy measure of respect Oriole was not a stake winner but was lapped ou Leonardo II mil Prudery at the finish of the Hopeful Stakes and comported himself well in other races with the elite of the year Kspecially did lie make a deep impression as a facile mud runner Karly in the year Plurihns was justly regarded as one or tiie host twoyearolds in action and although he scorned to train off in the fall is best gauged by his vic ¬ tories in the Whirl Stakes at Kmpire City and the Sanford Memorial Stakes at Saratoga Knohhic is son of Wrack which did some capital racing in the fall and in winning the Oakdale and Babylon Handi ¬ caps at Aqueduct twice defeated Grey Lag but with the weights much in his favor favorAs As the winner of the Futurity Step Lightly takes rank among the many good twoyearold lillies of 1020 Her speed was undeniable but she was not so consistent in her racing as her stablomate Careful Iiter ou when she undertook to give considerable weight to py liminy Sailing P and Paby Grand in the 1000 Manor Handicap at Laurel she failed completely Htlieve Idle Hour was a corking good lilly and showed her high quality when she carried 121 pounds to lu on Star Voter and defeated him by a neck in the Hreeders Futurity at Lexington in track record time Crocus won the Astor Dinner Stakes and the Beldame Stakes and at home was considered not far from Prudery With 122 pounds on bis back Mulciberfran Grey Lag to a half length iu the Autumn Days Stakes at Kmpire City and with the weights more in his favor defeated Inith Grey Lag and Knobbie in the Oceanus Handicap at Jamaica Idle Dell ran a great race when she won the Walden Stakes last fall fallOf Of the others handicapped all but Muskallonge and lion Homme were stake winners and all proved their right to inclusion iu this thirty list Others not included raced meritoriously on occasions and some of them may improve into highclass as threeyearolds Hut the following may prove to be a fair handicap of the thirty given preference preferenceProportion Proportion Horse Col and Sex Pedigree Handicap
