FAST WORK IN THE MUD Derby Candidates Show Up Well in Soft Going at Louisville Tracks LOUISVILLE Ky April 16 Either the Church ¬ ill Downs track is quite deceptive when muddy qr some of the Kentucky Derby candidates training over it are in unusual form The course already heavy was given another drenching for eight hours last night but despite this several of the eligible for the rich race made time in workouts this morning that would have been creditable had it been fast fastThe The most notable of these were Bon Ilomme and Leonardo II from the Xalapa Farm Stable each of which ran threequarters The former ran the distance in 114 while the latter ran one second slower Bon Hommes fractional time was unusu ¬ ally good as he ran the first eighth of a mile in 11 quarter in 123 threeeighths in 34 and a half mile in 47 lie wore blinkers and was ridden by jockey Andy Schuttinger The bay colt seemed to be at home in the muddy going and he displayed better form than in any of his previous works on a dry track trackLenoardo Lenoardo II which also was ridden by Schut tinger did not run quite as fast the first part of it as his stablcmate and he evidently is not near as fond of a soft track as Bon Homme lie ap ¬ peared to sprawl and flounder a bit while running down the backstretch but his rider held him to ¬ gether well and began to restrain him earlier than he did the other colt His fractional time was an eighth in 11 quarter in 24 three eighths in 3 and a half mile in 48 Both colts ran around two turns turnsA A high flight of speed in the mud was also dis ¬ played by Centimeter which was sent three eighths of a mile in 37 as an opener for a workout of one and onequarter miles tomorrow He ran the first quarter around a turn in 23 covering the initial eighth in 11 This colt is an excellent mud runner and won a race in it at Lexington last year yearBen Ben Bolt was given a gallop of a half mile in 49 which was fast under the conditions He ran the first threeeighths in 3G BILLY BARTONS WORK IMPRESSIVE Billy Barton Cuban Derby winner ran a mile in 145 under restraint Even though he won the big Havana stake in the mud this colt has never been considered a good performer over a soft track and his showing this morning was meritorious It was his first real set down farther than a short sprinting distance since he arrived here from the Cuban track trackRoy Roy Waldron assistant to trainer Kim Patter ¬ son of the Xnlapa Farm Stable left for Maryland on a business mission He will be gone several days daysMatt Matt J Winn vicepresident and general man ¬ ager of the Kentucky Jockey Club came in today from Lexington After a brief visit here lie will return to that city where he will remain until the meeting which opens there on next Saturday ends endsMarjorie Marjorie Hynes which has been showing unusual speed in her work here thus far this spring is rap ¬ idly recovering from an attack of indigestion which put her out of commission for several days past Gentry when he ships his outfit next Tuesday TuesdayGentry Gentry will take Sunny Slope Flags Ground Swell Rising Rock The Ally Sir Thomas Kean Buddie Kean and LErrant Sunny Slope is train ¬ ing famously and Gentry is confident that he will return to the races in winning form this year Flags appears to have lost his erratic habits and is showing his oldtime speed in his workouts Jockey Tommy Murray will depart for Lexington Tuesday also and will ride for Gentry there thereTrainer Trainer Joe Tigue will ship Day Lilly which is owned by F St John Detroit business man to Lexington to fill her engagement in the Ashland Oaks OaksSeven Seven horses will comprise the string to be sent to Lexington by trainer J S Ownbey Among them will be Botheration his Kentucky Derby eli ¬ gible gibleThe The exodus to Lexington will begin tomorrow and continue until Thursday morning
