day of the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Associations spring meeting was nothing more or less than a field day for the powerful racing stable of Commander J K L Ross Four of the Mon ¬ treal turfmans horses made their initial appear ¬ ance of the year and all four were returned win ¬ ners The gallant Billy Kelly won the Harford Handicap the peerless mare Milkmaid defeated Tippity Witchet in the TipTop Purse the Ross Derby candidate Sailing B was first home in the Chester Purse and Elemental a twoyearold son of Ultimiis Xarco making his turf debut carried off the juvenile dash that started the afternoons entertainment The ninth running of the Harford Handicap the stake feature of the program brought out a field of ten highclass racers and despite his heavy im ¬ post of 130 pounds Billy Kelly was the outstanding choice The great son of Dick Welles was never in better form and it was well that such was the case for W J Salmons crack filly Careful gave him the race of his life With the rise of the barrier Careful dashed to the front and set a ter ¬ rific pace running the half in 46 and when Billy Kelly challenged at the head of the stretch fought it out with him stride for Astride and f orced 1iim to equal the track record of 1711 Ys to bea t her by a head It was a great finish and the applause of the big crowd was as much for the game filly as it was for the popular Ross gelding Star Voter another of the Ross horses was third and he was followed home by Senuings Park Dr Clark Paul Jones and Wildair WildairThe The peerless Milkmaid had the capital Tippity Witchet as her most formidable opponent in the TipTop Purse and the easy manner in which she passed the Bauer star in the last eighth gave further evidence of the fine form the Ross horses are in Tippity Witchet led from the start but could not successfully resist the challenge of the speedy mare and had to lower his colors in the last sixteenth while Milkmaid drew away to win by two lengths lengthsCommander Commander Ross Derby candidate Sailing B made an impressive debut as a threeyearold de ¬ feating with ease some fair horses of his own age in the Chester Purse establishing a new
