AUSTRALIAS GREAT RACING Randwicks March Meeting Marked by Huge Betting and Attendance One of the great race meetings of Australia is that at the magnificent Randwick course of the Australian Jockey Club at Sydney N S W It was held March 2831 this year At the meeting the mutuel or totalizator take showed an increase but the unfavorable weather of the last day spoiled everything There was a falling off of about 13000 in the crowd as compared with Australian Jockey Club Plate day last season and the totalisator dropped from 281786 to 203303 These sums went into the machines in addition to those han ¬ dled by some 200 bookmakers bookmakersFor For the four days last year totalisator invest ¬ ment aggregated 1441957 and the attendance alwut 213000 This years figures were 1404217 and approximately 205000 With climatic condi ¬ tions favorable on the concluding day an attend ¬ ance of at least 45000 Avould have been reached reachedIn In stakes the clubs distribution was greater than at any previous meeting either in the autumn or spring Two races were run in divisions and between them they carried an extra 4500 so that assuming there is a likelihood of the full amount being paid out for the Australian Jockey Club Plate the club gave away 185750 in added money for twentysix races There was also a 1000 trophy for the Sydney Cup and as owners sweepstakes and forfeits amounted to 32890 the total distribu ¬ tion was 219HO 219HOThe The club does not receive a dollar in the way of entrance or acceptance fees money accompanying nominations being treated as forfeit or portion of sweepstakes so that everything goes to successful
