SOUTHAMPTON TO KNOBB1E Runs Fast Race to Account for Stake Feature at Jamaica Eternal Warmly Welcomed and andMakes Makes Auspicious Return Returnto to the Races NEW YORK N Y May 24 The thirteenth run ¬ ning of the Southampton Handicap for threeyear olcls at ono mile and a sixteenth was the stake attraction of the Metropolitan Jockey Club for todays racing at Jamaica While none of the ac ¬ knowledged topnotchers of the threeyearold divi ¬ sion were among the starters the eight that faced the barrier were of more than ordinary quality and apparently were evenly matched matchedThey They were away to a good start Knobbie carry ¬ ing the Quincy Stable colors and ridden by J Mooney rushing into the lead and setting a fast pace The son of Wrack Gold seemed to fly over the ground and soon had his opponents tired out chasing him He never faltered in his stride run ¬ ning the mile in 138 and the mile and a six ¬ teenth in 145 equalling the track record for the distance Sporting Blood wis second closing a big gap after beginning slowly and finishing with great speed Banksia from O A Cochrans stable ran well and outgamed Sedgefield for third place 7 K Wideners Iverninan was the public choice in the race but did nothing to warrant the support accorded him being outrun throughout The stake was worth 5G50to the winner winnerMuch Much interest was manifested in the first public appearance of Eternal which has not raced since bis great victory over Purchase in the Brooklyn Handicap of 1919 The popular son of Sweep was accorded a warm reception on his parade to the post in the sixth race and a still greater one when 1e galloped home a winner by four lengths estab ¬ lishing a new track record for a mile and seventy yards Schuttinger who rode Eternal as a three yearold was again in the saddle today and kept him under restraint while Lord Brighton was forc i i a fast pace When the mile post was reached Eternal moved into the lead and the race was over H cnsily held Tord Brighton safe in the stretch and then drew away from him at the end endCALAMITY CALAMITY JAXE SPEED MARVEL MARVELIt It was a casi of the II P Whitney stable versus the Rancocas stable in the opening dash which was s t fiveeighths of a mile for twoyearold fillies The spectators were almost equally divided in their fiipporf the Raicoeas stable having a slight edge at post time The Whitney stable was represented by Calamity Jane while Rose Itrigade and the first time starter Nightmare sported the Rancocas silks They were away to a fast start with Calamity Jane in the lead The daughter of Pennant displayed remarkable speed and it was soon evident the Ran ¬ tocas pair was doomed to defeat On she sped limning the half in 40 if and finishing the five eighths in 59 no second slower than the track record At no time was she in danger and while Rose Rrigado raced gamely and in closest pursuit could never improve her position Her stable mate wn third after a good performance on her initial turf Iww IwwThe The Xalapa Farm stable furnished the winner of the second race in the Sweep Sweet Clover colt Alexander Hamilton that was making his first appearance under colors The field was a large one in this race and Jock Scot received the bulk of the backing his odds receding from 4 to 1 to 11 to T at post time After dwelling at the start Alexander Hamilton surprised the spectators with a brilliant display of speed that soon brought him to the front and once there he found little trouble maintaining his advantage passing the judges a length and a half in advance of Jock Scot which ran close up all the way Uat never threatened the winner winnerAUDACIOUS AUDACIOUS TAST RACE RACEThe The Dakota Handicap was looked forward to as a supreme test of speed with some of the fastest horses at the Jamaica course as prospective par ¬ ticipants Withdrawals reduced the field from twelve to three and robbed the race of all interest However it was a fast run contest with Audacious the winner by three lengths covering the three quarters of a mile in 111 f Dream of the Valley was second after a fine display of early speed which he however failed to maintain to the end Thunderclap the other starter found the pace too hot and could not keep up upS S A Clopton representing the Elkwond Park Stable sold the twoyearold Mawreoron to Fred Burlew T A Cassidy has been appointed official ob
