SLASHING RACER OF JDLDJ History of The Bard Winner of TwentySeven Stake Races and Over 80000 A slashing racer on the American turf in tlie late 80s was The Kard winner of twenty seven races all stake races twelve in succession and wortii 80805 The Kard was unquestionably tins best horse that ever carried the colors of tlie late A J Cassatt president of the Pennsylvania Ririlroad and father of the present Major E J5 Cnfisatt who it is said will race again this year The Kard made his first start as a twoyearold at Shccpshead Kay June 4 1885 in an allowance race the only race other than a stake in which lie ever started He was beaten in his first start by Inspector 1 a popular racer of those days The Kard did little as i twoyearold to suggest the successful racer of the following two years He began his triumphant career as a threeyear old by winning the Preakiiess Stakes one mile and a half in 245 over a fair track at Kaltimore May 21 1886 He carried 118 pounds won easily by three lengths from Eurus with Elkwood third ten lengths farther back Then Inspector It beat him a length for the Kelmont Stakes it mile and a half in 241 at Jerome Park He was unplaced to Dry Monopolc when that good horse wpn the Green Grass Stakes from Inspector K at Coney Island The next time out The Kard was beaten three lengths by Inspectbr K for the Stud Stakes one and threeeighths miles in 223 34 and two days later June 21 he was beaten a head on the post by Winifred in tlie Emporium Stakes one and onehalf miles in 243 lie was giving AVini fred nine and onehalf pounds At Coney Island June 30 he met Dew Drop Con Grcgaii and llousa tonic in the Spindrift Stakes at one and onequar tcr miles Dew Drop which was carrying 115 pounds to The Kards 114 made it u dead heat with him in 2OOJj Dwyer Krothcrs declined to run again and The Kard walked over for the stakes 3025 This was followed by his victory in the Karncgnt Stakes one and onehalf miles in 245 V at JMoninouth Park July 15 He beat Juarto by six lengths in a canter Winifred third He hooked up with Dew Drop in the Stevens Stakes at Monmoiith Park July 20 each carrying 118 pounds Jimmy McLauglilin was on Dew Drop and oiitfinished Fisher Dew Drop won by half a length the one and fireeighth miles being run in 254 VJ Charity in receipt of twelve pounds from The Kard beat him n length and 1 half for the Raritan Stakes four days later the one and onefourth miles being run in 214 Kut from that time to the end of the season and well on into the next yejir no horse showed his heels to The Hard He won twelve races in succession from July 27 1886 to June 25 18S7 The eight straights in 1886 were the Freehold Stakes one and onehalf miles in 245X the Omnibus Stakes beating Dew Drop in a canter by four lengths one and onehalf miles in 230 Dew Drop carrying 121 to Iiis 118 the Choice Stakes in which he gave Dew Drop five pounds and beat him a neck the one and onehalf miles in 230 the September Stakes one and threequarters miles with 125 pounds up in 305 the Jerome Stakes one and threequarters miles no time taken the Dixie Stakes cantering away from Klae Wing by four lengths at the end of the two miles in 333 the Kreckinridge Stakes in which he gave Klue Wing five pounds and beat him eight lengths two miles in 335 and the Potomac Stakes at Washington October 30 in which he met only Klkwood carried even weights 118 pounds and beat him the one and threeeighths miles in a canter by eight lengths in 227 WINS SIX OUT OF EIGHT RACES RACESThe The Rard came out for his first race as a four yearold at Krooklyn June 14 winning the June Special one and oneeighth miles in 155 from Tclic Doe and Itanium He was pulling up at the end six lengths in front of the mare Two days later came his ridiculously easy victory over Hidal go Itanium and Elkwood in the St James Hotel Handicap one and onequarter miles in 208 Ky the scales he was giving weight to the others At Shetpshead Kay June 21 The Kard carrying 118 pounds met Troubadour then five years old carry ¬ ing 122 pounds aud beat him easily by three lengths one and oneeighth miles in 155 for the Coney Island Stakes Ilayward riding The Kard and Garrison piloting Troubadour June 25 lie won the Coney Island Cup one and threequarters miles in 303 cantering three lengths in front of Kar num Eikmod was third and Rataplan fourth and last At Monmouth Park July 4 Troubadour turned the tables on The Kard It was for the Ocean Stakes and they had the same riders and were weighted the same as for the Coney Island Stakes Troubadour passed The Kard in tin home ¬ stretch and won in a canter by three lengths the one and oneeighth miles being run in 150V For the Miiimoiith Cup July 14 these two were again tlie only starters and Troubadour was easily tlie victor by a length They had the same riders but The Pard carried 123 to Troubadours 121 The time for the one and threequarters miles was 304 Tlie Kard got his revenge when lie won the Free ¬ hold Slakes at Monmouth August 4 Karniim came into this race with Fitzpatrick as his pilot and finished second three lengths behind The Pard and a length in front of Troubadour the time for the one and onehalf miles being 230 He ran again at Monmouth August 0 and won the Eatontown Stakes by a length and a half from Preciosa to which he was giving fifteen pounds the mile being covered in 143 This was his last race as a fouryearold The Krooklyn Handicap at Gravesond May 15 1888 was the first if The Kards seven successive victories as a fiveyear old In this race he de ¬ feated Hanover by a length with Exile third and eight others behind them Hanover was a year younger than The Kard and they each carried 125 pounds Tlie time for the one and onequarter miles was 213 Next he beat Sir Dixon and Kan bury for the St James Hotel Stakes one and one quarter miles in 2OSX May 24 Two days later he defeated Aolanto Hanover and Fenelon for the Krooklyn Cup one and onehalf miles in 242l Ky this time they grew tired running after him and The Kard walked over lor the Second Special at Grnrcsond May 30 and the Coney Island Stakes at Sheepsheail Kay June 16 Hidalgo and Elkwood essayed u contest with him for the Coney Island Cup June 21 and lie easily showed them his heels the one and threequarters miles being run in 306 The Kard scored his last victory in the 1 Ocean Stakes at Monmoutli July 4 defeating Kingston and Firenze He won easily by four lengths running the one and oneeighth miles in 155 His career on the turf ended when Firenze ridden by Garrison at 113 pounds defeated Jiim in 1 a canter by three lengths for the Freehold Stakes 1 at Monmouth August 2 Firenze ran the one and I onehalf miles in 231 Tlie Kard carried 120 I pounds and was ridden by Ilayward The tabulated record of his
